New 996TT Owner in Tampa FL
Hello everyone,
(This is a mirror post from 6spdonline, so pls forgive me if you already read)
I’ve been hunting for a Pcar for a while, my old man has been taking me to look at 911s since I was about 8. Grew up wanting a 911. He currently has a nice ’82 SC, but I just wasn’t “sold” on the car – especially for the price they command these days. I was looking for a later model air cooled, when one night I said “f*^& it, how about a Turbo”? I was approaching it as a joke because I assumed the price tag would be astronomical, but surprisingly I found some reasonable water cooled cars. Then my next thought was there must be some prohibitive maintenance for these cars. Through a bunch of research, I learned how reliable the Mezger motors are. The search was on.
I found a 2001 996TT with 30k on the clock in Ft Lauderdale – at Champion Porsche. I emailed back and forth – but the summary is this: car was presented as clean and dry. Asked for a DME only to find out it had level 2 over-revs in the last 20 mins. Still pursued the car, but asked for leakdown / compression. Was told “all is good”. Rented a car and drove 3 hours from Tampa. The car was meticulous from afar, but I spotted a large amount of fresh oil on the motor as soon as I looked under the car. We tossed it ona rack, was leaking oil from the cylinders at the head. Dealer said “all Porsches leak”. I promptly left.
My father just happened to have found another 996TT in Ft Myers with 24k on the clock. It had some mild mods on it, but I was looking for stock, so initially passed over it. After the failed Lauderdale car, I called on this 996TT. Turns out the owner was a great guy, also had a 930 Turbo, two Panteras, a 72 track 911, etc. Needless to say, the car was clean and well documented. A few ignitions at level two over-rev (I think 8 total), and normal level one over-revs. I gave him a deposit, and returned a few days later amidst a tropical storm (Hermine) to nab the car, lest it be grabbed by someone else.
For performance mods, it has a 911Tuning (now Markski) exhaust, a Softronics flash, and upgraded diverter valves. Cosmetically it has 19” Champion wheels, Tech-Art side skirts, and a GT2-look spoiler.
To say the least, the car is amazing. I am accustomed to middle-weight sportbikes (600s) that pull insanely hard, but this thing delivers the same rush in a car. I haven’t owned a car that is this fun to drive, well, ever. Don’t plan to mod it much, it's setup fairly well as it sits... with a few exceptions I will address in a separate post.
So that’s it… now you all know how I got here!

Congrats on the car, looks great! Champion wheels correct? If so, very lightweight!
PS. Anytime I see someone from Florida I always recommend taking a trip down south in March for Das Renn Treffen...awesome Porsche only event in Miami. I posted a thread about last year's with a bunch of pics at 6speed. Well worth the drive!

Three Wheelin'
Those 19s are a bit big. Are you thinking about going back to 18s?
PS, I just realized that I already chimed in on your Sixspeed post.

I'm in Tarpon Springs... but with standard 996 cabriolet. Saw your thread with Tampa in the title and had to take a peek!
Glad I did, it's a beautiful car. Congrats!
