Default Help identifying noise

I have heard this before while driving. Always assumed it was throw out bearing or something because if i pushed clutch in it stopped. Tonight i was just warming the car up and once it got up to temp i gave it some slow revs up to about 2800 rpm and this noise came on. No clutch, not driving - its in neutral. Couldnt make it happen repeadetly. Intermittent...but when i drive seems to always be there until i push in clutch. Any ideas on the culprit? Anyone had this before?

thanks

I believe that the power steering pump/reservoir. I think I have read something about a check valve that is common to fail

That's classic power steering valve squeal/whistle noise. That it goes away when you press the clutch down confirms it.

The only way I know to "fix" it is to replace the power steering pump reservior/tank which has a new (improved I don't know) valve. Unfortunately the new reservior/tank is not cheap but it is a very nice reservoir.

I've heard it's more of an annoyance than a functional problem. I had it for a couple months and have not heard it since.

it doesnt bother me when driving as i can barely hear it but last night after car warmed up sitting in garage i revved it and heard it (video) and wow is it loud! I also need to address clutch accumulator. Getting hard to push in pedal during start up.

AFAIK the noise from the power steering tank valve is harmless. More damage is often inflicted by someone trying to disconnect the power steering lines incorrectly when replacing this tank.

The clutch being hard to press before the engine starts is almost certainly an accumulator gone bad. But this too is harmless.

You have to keep an eye out for signs of a clutch slave cylinder leak though. The fluid is not nice to rubber (and possibly paint) and you don't want to run the power steering pump low on fluid.

the ps res valve whistling is indeed harmless. it's amusing to see the common points of failure occur on these cars albeit w only 15k miles. some things are just gonna fail lol. no big deal though just r&r the ps reservoir or live with it as it wont "harm" anything.

I could see the valve getting sticky from little use and going away after getting driven more?

Doesn't work that way. At least that is my experience.

My 2003 Turbo was little used -- had just 10K miles on it when I bought it in 2009 -- and the power steering tank valve was quiet. Also, the accumulator worked and the clutch slave cylinder didn't leak.

I used the car a lot having put nearly 50K miles on it from June 2009 to June 2011 when the CPO warranty expired on time.

But before the warranty expired the clutch accumulator had gone bad along with the clutch slave cylinder.

I continued to drive the car and at some point the power steering valve started making noise. I can't recall the miles it first appeared but at around the 100K mile mark it was a pretty common noise. I forget at what miles I had it dealt with.

I just took her out for a nice 30 mile cruise around town on some nice winding backroads here in charlotte. Now that the noise is there when warmed up it drive me nuts! Thank god its in back and the wonderful sport exhaust driwns most of it out.
