In reading the other posts this sounds like a well maintained car at a good price. Given how little mileage you plan to put on it the car will probably not lose any value over time.

What color is the interior/exterior?
Silver on black interior.

Sounds like you have your answer here, buy it with a clean PPI, especially if you've been looking a while and done your research.

Is the thought of $5-10 grand for the price of fun over the coming year palatable?

Have you been looking long enough to feel comfortable with it?

Expensive toys often sell slowly, could be your issue too if you want to sell later, how long has it been up?

I say $5-10k for admission because you may need to put that in it at some point and selling with closer to 100k miles MAY prove more difficult, an/or you'll get less $.

Summer is half over, you may want a car now to enjoy on dry
pavement for a couple months?

Would you be F'd if you needed out of the car quickly?

Consider half the $40k gone from the get go and be fine with it.
You're driving a bad *** car that everyone knows is not cheap to do.
If it were, Honda and Toyota would depreciate half their value in 3 years and people wouldn't buy them as easily.

Silver over black is very common but also very sellable.

With collector cars, which the 996TT is becoming, mileage is not as critical as condition and proper maintenance. I think if you bought this car you would not regret it. Enjoyment has value too.

Did the 01 cars have any options with the stereo or did they all receive the same? The owner of another 01 I had a look at told me his car had the high end stereo??

There were different stereos offered, but I really don't think that you can call any stereo from 2001 a "high end" unit anymore. I just don't think the stereo system is a significant factor.

I am just trying to determine which one is considered the "better" stereo option

490 - Hi-Fi sound

or

680 - DSP Digital sound processing

don;t worry about the stereo in order to get good sound you have to change it anyway.
the car I am selling for my friend has the Harmon package.

I realize that a stereo shouldn't be a deal breaker....just trying to better understand all the different options that were available in 01

I would go for it.

I will be doing what you're doing in 6 months, assuming I can find one with service records like the one you've found.

Seeing people write to allow for 5-10k in unanticipated repairs gives me pause, but really when I think about the depreciation that I would otherwise blindly tolerate on my alternative (new BMW 340xi) choice, I am convincing myself that there is a financial argument for going the 996TT route too. I just don't think that a well maintained 996TT will ever go below say, 35k?

Not a bad idea to budget for repairs, but don't let that scare you away. My car just had its first "break" a couple of months ago when a wastegate actuator rod broke. $200 in parts and a DIY labor job. That was after 9 months and nearly 5,000 miles of ownership. And the conventional wisdom on the board here was that I bought a, ahem, "high risk" car (to put it in polite terms). So, the $5,000 to $10,000 in maintenance is not a given. In fact, if you were to poll the members about first year repair maintenance costs, I would bet the average is waaay below $10,000. There have been a couple of guys stung by high repair bills right after a purchase, but that is the exception rather than the rule, I would bet.

In 5 years my total cost to fix stuff is about $1000. Add in a few fluid changes, tires, and a battery, and the total is maybe $2500, but a lot of that you would have with any car you buy.

I find that if you go with the right car in the first place, not just the cheapest one, your maintenance costs should be minimal.

Where stereo is concerned the real bonus isn't the system, it's the wiring. Pre-03 cars use wiring. Later cars have an optical bus the complicates upgrades.
You'll benefit from a different head unit, amp and speakers whether Bose or not.

As the
saying goes: "No highs? No lows? Must be Bose."
