A true AWD vehicle does not require the driver to actively shift between two-wheel and four-wheel mode. If it does, it is a 4x4 masquerading as AWD.
I just followed your link during a boring conference call.

Sorry, but the author of the article and video in the link above has no clue. He narrates the video and talks of a 4wd system not being full time and requiring some kind of manual input vs. AWD. At the same time you see a new Range Rover driving through pylons. Yet Land Rover calls the system 4wd and every Range Rover from 1970 has had full time 4wd.

Tech Specs for 2014 Range Rover from http://media.landrover.com/en/tech-specs

Four-wheel drive system

Permanent 4 wheel drive with standard locking centre di erential & Terrain ResponseTM 2, standard rear locking di erential.

And what I've been trying to explain to you - repeatedly - is that this is a translational idiosyncrasy or maybe simply a translational trait caused by the commonly used German term for 4wd being Allradantrieb, or AWD.

Right...AWD.

Oh, I saw that. I simply chose not to lower myself to that level of conversation in a reply to that...

But PAG/PCNA could have just as easily used, from the introduction of very first 911 Turbo, the term "4wd" for the U.S. market. But they didn't. They used (and continue to use) the term "AWD".

Obviously they are.

Dealers don't know everything about 911 Turbos. Many times they can't even identify Arctic Silver from Polar Silver.

Here's what the people in the know say (look under "Transmission")...

"Driveline layout All-wheel drive"

I wonder if the glass is half full or half empty.

Like I said, my permanent (viscous coupling) 4/All WD Volkswagen is labelled 4WD and I don't really care if my 996tt with the same drivetrain is AWD or 4WD as long as it performs well. Peace.

Ach komm , WOTever , ist dieses Thema viel zu interessant aufgeben . Ich sage, wir leicht noch 10 Seiten Beiträge darüber zu streiten, 4x4 gegen AWD zu bekommen.

I say, "Toe-May-Toe"... You say, "Toe-Mot-Toe"

Let's call the whole thing off!

My understanding is that 4 wheel drive has a mechanical transfer case and AWD has electronic diifs.

Do I win?
