Default Rear axle / rear drive shaft compatability

Refinishing my calipers I figured I'd chase down a noise from the rear of the car that I assumed to be a wheel bearing and it ended up my axle nut was on a wing and a prayer. I didn't get more than 10ft lb of tq on the nut and it popped right off I was a little shocked because I'm still learning the car and therefore drive it very conservatively.

What rear axles years or part numbers are compatible with a 2002 6 speed turbo? A little google searching makes it look like pretty much anything 99-07 will fit if it's manual, is this a correct assumption?

Thanks
Shawn

any 996/early 997 TT(manual), GT2, GT3, Cup rear CV shaft fits...later 997 axles have different style ABS pick-up, ours have exposed tone ring
lots of corrosion there...I'd be replacing the hub/wheel bearing while in there

Perfect, thank you for clarifying. I'll be replacing both axles and bearings.

Hey Rob
I have no idea but why are street car axles are better than Cup axles. I would have thought the cup would have been tuffer.

Hey Jim!
Oddly enough, exactly the opposite the 'black' TT/GT axles the tough ones..
Cheers,
Rob

Sveach: That failure point is very common on the Cup Cars

Unfortunately, with the Center Lock wheels, once that fails - you lose the wheel also !

He should have a bearing/carrier connected to where the freshly sheared metal is. I have a set of new output flanges on the way after seeing some of his other pics. Lots of hard R comp use with more power seems to shred a few items.
Thanks for all the research Pwdrhound, makes life a lot easier for others!

I believe John has had different point of failure vs the common Cup Car issue posted above....a sheared hub near the running bearing surface vs the axle shear issue in Cup...I think there's a strong chance it's a batch-related metallurgical issue for the new 997 hubs John had issue with given the age/duty cycle with failure(he is working on a making 'HD' version) ...has anyone run a FEA on stock/997? ... Cup cars fatigue their axles due to Centre-lock working fatigue, shock loads
The DSS axles Steve posted about will handle big power, may not be what's needed here though....
