I have used solar 'chargers' as battery tenders on both stored cars & boats.

Definitely the way to go when electrical power is not an option.

Before you disconnect the battery make sure you have the radio code. If you dont have it there are places on line you can obtain it for a nominal fee. Secondly when you go to use it after the battery has been disconnected for extended periods, the ecu will probably have to go thru a relearn.

Thanks, yes, this was my concern for disconnecting the battery.

I've never had a code issue? maybe the "most" system doesn't require it as I've never needed it upon battery disconnect. my 02 needed the radio code if battery was out for more than a few minutes iirc(?).

Pre-MOST ('01) requires the radio code. MOST (02-> ) cars have the radio locked to the cars ECU. Nice to not have to remember where the radio code is, but an expensive pain when you replace the headunit and need your local PIWIS equipped shop to sync the headunit up to your car...

Most was not available in 02, it came into effect starting in 03. So, the 2001 and 2002 need the radio code.

My 996TT is dead after a couple of weeks. Had a Braille 21 in it & would die after a couple of days (POS). Thankfully Braille made it right a couple of weeks ago and let me send it back to be used against a new one. Went with their new lithium which has treated me really well.

thx, that explains that. i've wondered, how that was and suspected it was fibre optic/digital vs analog, a topic with which i've struggled my entire career.. but the real question is why i've endured this POS "most" system as long as i have. i swear the cdr23(?) goes on/off by itself sometimes.

i'm leaning toward "apple play" but am thankfully too busy hanging onto the steering wheel to really do much about it. so far.

I don't know about the porsche, but this happened to me on two other cars and it was a huge pain. The cars kept failing emissions testing for O2 sensors not ready. I very much don't want to deal with that again.

oh,many of us have gone thru readiness "hell" with these cars. be a good idea to read up before you go get tested if you haven't already smogged. this of course is only geography relevant. i dont think it would matter much in say WY. but in CA?? oh man... when your obd says "not ready"?! you are NOT ready!

Default Smog Test After Battery Disconnected

My Porsche mechanic indicated that I will heve problems with CA smog tests if I disconnect the battery. You will also loose all settings if the car is not kept on a charger.

Buy a solar charger with a automatic cut-off when the battery is fully charged.
If you use the cigg lighter as the charge point, make sure it works with the key off...

Click the hood latch closed then let the lid down on it so that it can't get locked by accident.
