That's possible but the car I'm talking about was on the market for longer than two years, do not remember the dealer.

I would pay 70k for a 996tt if I really wanted it or if prices climbed to a point where that is what it took to get a really nice car= realize that isn't where we are now.

I have been looking for a 997 and always expand my search to the 996's out of curiosity and have noticed for the past year that some of those big dollar 996's are still for sale! I don't think the market is quite there yet for 996's unless you have a really special one.

I suggest you drive both the 996 and 997 and decide for yourself which one you like better. To me the 997 is so much more car with a higher quality interior. My wife and I prefer the round head lights too. No doubt both are great cars, but if I had my choice between the 996TT and the 997TT with all things being equal including price, it seems like a no brainer to pick the 997TT. Good luck!

I like the round headlights on the 997 well enough but the dash is terrible and the driving feel is too detached for me while the 996 has just enough old school to make it still feel connected, agree its a personal call.

Too detached? I'm surprised to hear you say that as other people I have talked with felt the complete opposite. I thought the steering feel was great and chassis setup was excellent. The 997 felt like an evolution change in terms of handling when compared to the 996. In my opinion the 997 felt more polished than the 996 and I felt like it was much better built too. I always felt the Porsche accountants and bean counters really took over when the 996/986 was introduced.

To the OP no doubt drive both cars because you can see the views and personal preferences can vary from car guy to car guy! Good luck!

To me its how a car feels and being older may have something to do with it but the 997 feels like every other modern sports car= the 996tt still has a little old 911 that makes it feel real. I do not want a car that does everything for me, but as said its a personal call and who really cares as long as the person paying for it is happy. I drove a low mile 997tt that was a beauty and well within my budget while shopping and after test drive never looked back, the real tell tale sign you like a car or not lol.

This is as with everything else, not everyone likes the same things.

What's interesting is that some people have a hard time understanding or even accepting when someone says that they prefer the 996. 997 is not THAT much better.

If you head over to 991 forum, you see the exact same thing. 991 owners "bashing" on the 997 saying that the 991 makes the 997 look old and dated. When the very same people had the 997, they would praise it like crazy, now it's just a boring and dated car. Always makes me chuckle.

Not everyone going for a 996 is a cheap poor man either that some tend to insinuate, that's just plain stupid.

The 993 is an inferior car in many ways compared to the 996 and 997, some people will still pick that over the younger siblings.

997.2 Turbo is a much better performer than the 997.1 Turbo..id still pick the 997.1 Turbo Everytime.

Just enjoy and be happy with what you have.

man, i absolutely adored my 993 with its "thumping" door closures, and can only guess at how much i would love having a 993 turbo but i'll never know. that said, i'd much prefer having a 997 turbo over the 996 i've got ( let's just call it round headlamps ) as long as i had the exact same mods as i have now. e.g. apples to apples only "newer" car ( the 997 ).

it's just not in the cards for me to get into the 997t ( now ) though i almost made the move twice. something always held me back and it always came down to the fact the if i got into the 997t i'd wince at every rock chip, every old person smacking into my door while parked in a lot, or some other thing that would prevent me from driving it how and where i like with impunity.

at some point perhaps the 997 turbo's will come down in price a bit closer to the precipitous fall we've witnessed of the 996's! though i highly doubt it.

round headlamps'll probably prevent that fall in price lol. but it is after all a hobby car that gives me incalculable amounts of daily joy, so whatever. the 996 turbo headlamp cluster will one day be seen as a 'classic" departure from all previous iterations, rather than a design "error" which some that don't know any better believe.

^^^ What Berra said.

Just to add to the discussion and angle that may not be considered- while talking to my mechanic, he said that for the 997 and up, Porsche has been using a lot more plastic for things that used to be metal. To me that is a huge red flag because plastic obviously degrades faster than metal. (the context of the conversation was why some parts on the 996 were plastic instead of metal).

I never considered a 97TT because of this. I assumed(maybe mistakenly) that the 997TT was even more of a GT/luxury car then the 996TT. Also 997TT has a fancier computer controlled AWD system that I did not want. I have no interest in a GT-R style car which the newer turbo's seem to be competing against.

I did consider the 997.2 S but my 996TT fell into my lap.

I was referring to a 2005 996 Turbo S, which is a rare car, especially a coupe with a manual. 70k for a just a normal 996 Turbo, is too high as there is a nice 2001 for sale with 13k miles for 52k on here, and am suprised it has not been picked up, I'm guessing if it was a X50 car it would be gone already. If you read the reviews of the 997.1T when it came out even the professials complained that the car felt off, and were relieved that Porsche fixed it in the 7.2T, so it's not just the 996s fanatics talking crap.

re 997.1 vs 997.2 i don't think it a mistake to give more than just a nod to the 997.1 being the last of the mezger motored porsche turbo's. i never really liked the 997.2's but never had enough seat time to actually pinpoint why exactly. but i think everyone mentioning it being the more "genteel" gt type car as compared to all the earlier iterations is probably pretty close to my reasoning about them also.

"collector wise" 997.1 turbo will be the better car, last of the mezger, round lights, and available with a stick.

I bought my 996TT to drive and enjoy so I don’t really care(but hoping it does not depreciate much too)

i wholly agree 100%
..the only thing about further depreciation of ours is miles. trust me on that. at 135k+ i'm going for t2's ( 400/500k ) record.

but i've always had a hankering for the 997.1T also. it's just always been 20K above my ( who cares about rock chips and door dings" budget. )

while my 2nd 996T is impervious. lol

Equivalent cars in terms of type, options and mileage... Add $25k for the 997 version.
