Porsche will do something to differentiate the top of the line car. My guess is an electric motor type solution like the 918 is in the works.

You also have to consider that our cars were the pinnacle *at the time.* Comparing them to car progress 15+ years later will always lead to disappointment.

I would never call it disappointment and have enjoyed cars with less power just as much if not more than my 996t. I would take a na 993 over any new Porsche but then I'm not caught up on performance numbers.

I would take a pre 1973 911S over any modern 911, with the lone exception of the 4.0

Porsches of all kinds have stood the test of time and emerged highly prized. The same will no doubt happen with our cars. It's very interesting to see what they're doing with the new models, though.

Are you talking about driving the '73 or keeping it as a collector car?

Have you spent a good amount of time behind the wheel of a '73 911?

The way I see it the Turbo has always utilized turbo chargers to push the limits and to create an incredibly fast and superior street car. Basically the Turbo is the ultimate street 911.

The new turbocharged Carreras (no doubt great cars) are basically using turbos to help achieve better emissions requirements and still make great power with smaller displacement.

The lines between the Turbo and Carrera seem to be getting just a little blurred now (ever since 997.2 TT, imho) because before that the Mezger motor really made a big distinction between Turbo and Carrera. With that said I still think the upcoming Turbo will still be at the cutting edge of what is possible as far as raw speed and performance.

996TT have that wonderful Mezger that has proven itself many times over and it will always be a Turbo

Driving it! I have spent zero time behind the wheel of one, sadly. The oldest 911 I've driven is an SC, which I liked very much (have been trying to find a good one for a year), but if I could afford it I'd take an older and rawer (if it's even a word) 911 model.

I hate to tell you I know several people who wanted the "raw" experience of an early 911 and were not so happy with that experience when they tried to live with it over the long term.

I own a 356C and rarely drive it because to be blunt the driving experience is absolute crap. I have owned it over twenty years and fully restored it myself. I love the car but do not really love driving it. My brother in law has an early 911 and he feels the same way. Loves to look at it, driving it not so much.

And it isn't just Porsches. Many old and highly valuable Ferraris drive like trucks. Be careful what you wish for. There is fine line between raw and antiquated.

The new 911 is going to be absolutely fantastic. As far as power output they might be able to put out impressive numbers depending on turbo flow and engine strength but time will tell.

The 996 TT is a fabulous car and the power of any slightly modified car is really fun and still a very quick car. I don't see the future turbo (carrera) cars really making much of an impact on the 996 market simply because of the Mezger equation.

As far as old 911's go having driven a massive amount of examples they are quite fun to drive. I actually prefer the 2.0L T models as more power doesn't really make the chassis that much more fun simply because even the fastest isn't exactly what I am going to call quick by todays standards. The T with the Carbs and the 2.0L motor just really makes me happy with the audio track especially if you can ring a few extra RPM from the motor. That being said I much rather drive a raw modern car then a raw car of days gone past. To make a modern car feel like an older car is actually a very easy thing to do. A modern racecar on the road is far more fun, more reliable not to mention safe. Ohh, I should add with the prices going the way they are its also way less expensive.

I own the cars I want to own right now, in the future it might change but then I will just go ahead and add those to my collection if funds allow.

completely agree. the last I drove was a 991S and based upon an hour in that, I am certain I would be perfectly happy with a new turbo charged 911 "s" model. it's rare that 911's get "worse" and I think the new 911's will be better by far. the last "old" ones I really enjoyed were the 993 iterations.

The 993 is my least favorite 911 and it wasn't until I owned one that I made that decision.

i've had four of the 911 and loved mine equally yet differently than the turbo(s). but not any less. i especially enjoyed how the doors thumped upon closing. it was a posh karmann ghia.

You may be right, but I'm sick and tired of all the electronic stuff that modern cars come with. One of the reasons why I picked the 996tt over the 997tt is that it felt marginally simpler and more basic and less assisted. I long for an non-intermediated experience, without a computer always busy making me a better driver.

The SC I drove felt great for example, in the end I didn't buy it for other reasons but I'm still searching for one. I have to imagine I would like the earlier 911s even more. I actually think that the recent sharp increase in 3.2s and SCs, until recently the runts of the litter of 911s, is driven by people who feel the same way as me...
