Default anyone install the Pioneer CarPlay/Android head units?

I wondering if anyone has the latest Pioneer double-DIN smart head units installed (4100NEX, 7100NEX, 8100NEX, the ones with both CarPlay and Android Auto support)?

Particularly in a 2001 or 2002 (without all the MOST system nonsense)?

These seem like the best way to go from antique nav/ent to "more modern than the current factory Porsches", and I'm curious how difficult/expensive the swap is.

those ( and dbl din 7100/8100ex or an alpine unit probably make the most ( no pun intended ) sense for my 03 as my system is toast. but I've been having a real difficult time justifying 2k for a radio. any radio.

it needs the unit (500/800 min) the harness, the surround enclosure! the antenna.. an amp,... probably focals and.. **** 2k/2500. I'm looking for a more affordable solution that'll bluetooth the music and nav/gps rather than built in gps. but i share the quandary as to "what to do" to get rid of this wretched cdr23 setup. MOST?! the acronym should be LEAST.

Listen thru your smartphone with a set of earplugs and have gps separate. Not trying to be funny its cheap and it will work, me personally I wish my car didn't have a radio and usually discard them when building a car.

Yes, this was a major reason that I looked for an '02, rather than an '03 or later. Much easier to upgrade to a modern nav/ent system than with the later MOST systems.

I also added a pioneer double din nav headunit in my boxster and 996tt. Both were 02 models and one of the reasons I specifically looked for this model year. The upgrade is very easy. I have the nav connected to a 16gb iPod nano with about 2500 songs at my fingertips. I left the speakers alone as I thought the Bose sounded good at least compared to front speakers in my boxster. In the boxster I had changed the front speakers to some infinity's.

even the stock bose system, i cant even convey the difference in sound quality btw my 02 vs my 03 i.e. night/day. the most system SUCKS while the bose analog ( 02 ) setup was sweet w great bass response. not so the 03. complete crap.

i'm also seeking options that are NOT 2500+. the wire harness in the 03 isn't the issue as i'll just run a new one, and leave the older one intact in case it ever needs to return to oem. not that it would but i like reversible mods.

I've done this for now (iPhone 6+ holder and BT enabled single DIN head unit) but I am very interested in the CarPlay platform.

I am using the factory amp and speakers (Bose of course) from 2002. Everything works nicely and I put the microphone where the factory location is in the dash.

I suspect the flat-panel, double-DIN Pioneer units will have a much cleaner "stock" look than the traditional single-DIN units. But that's why I'm asking here, and hoping for photos of an installed unit in a 996tt. :-)

like it. thx. i'm going to leave the "most/least" and rewire analog to accommodate an alpine. check the old speakers and replace if/as needed, and bluetooth it. thats all i need. i dont really favor the look of the dbl dins to be honest. yours looks subdued and all i need is b'tooth connectivity and music. thx.

Here's what it looked like in my boxster. It's not an NEX but is the older pioneer 840bt. I think it has a very clean and stock look.

If aesthetics are important and you have some flexibility in your budget I would look at Alpine X008 or its predecessor the INE-Z928. These are 8" screens. The radio surround will require a little trimming but if you have a good installer these will look pretty OEM as you won't need any sort of filler or trim plate.

I just installed the Kenwood Excelon DDX9902S in my 2002 and love it so far. It is apple & android friendly. My car had the bose system and factory nav. I Put the oem cubby in place of the nav disk section. My total cost was around $1070 installed.
