Crusing engine RPM -

When driving in conditions that don't require much throttle change, I don't let the RPM get below 2000 in any gear higher than 2nd. That's not to say that I don't drive at higher RPM, it's to say that 2000 RPM is the lowest RPM in 3-6 in those conditions.

Tooling around town or non-"cruise" highway, I'm rarely below 3k.
My car and my ears are happiest that way.

Thanks for the input; I'm glad you asked the question. I've noticed a depreciable drop in cabin engine noise (i.e., vroom) from 5th to 6th while doing the typical 55 mph highway ride. I figured the engine noise would get annoying on long trips like that, and 6th made it sound much softer.
Are some saying that keeping the revs fairly above 2k make the engine and tranny "happier?"

I also find sixth gear pretty quiet, much more drivable on long rides than 5th. I also noticed that the motor builds tons of boost in that gear. I never really see .7 in other gears, but in sixth just tap on the gas from 65 to 90mph and it easily build .7 boost pressure.

Yes. Asking for even mild acceleration in too tall a gear at low RPMs puts a lot of demand on the engine. See "lugging." EDIT: I'm referring here more to driving around town than on the highway, in case that weren't clear. That said, I almost invariably elect to drop a gear (or two, even) if I'm going to tap more than a few extra MPH, as the situation demands/permits.

If you like how it sounds and like to burn fuel, then leave the revs up. I generally shift to 6th by 60 or 65mph.

I use 6th once over 60 -65 if I'm driving on flat roads and steady state speed. If hilly or speeding up/slowing down then 5th below 65-70. Engine seems just fine there. Drove a PDK car recently and was surprised to see how quickly it shifted into top gear - ran engine well below 2000rpm quite frequently.
