Default Reset miles on odometer? There must be a way...

I swapped gauge clusters to get rid of the oil level reading failure message. But the cluster I bought shows 1K miles and my car has 47K miles. I had my shop document the swap, but I would like to run up the miles on my new cluster to reflect actual miles. IWIS does not do this, but I've seen some kluge solutions on youtube. Is there an established shop that can get this done?

TIA

Dealer should be able to answer question or one of the cluster repair shops.

I imagine he has the same expression while pondering the same dilemma.

Perhaps I wasn't clear:

1. I need to add miles, not subtract them.

2. This isn't a question about whether a dealer can do it. The dealer cannot. The dealer uses a Porsche-issued and supported computer and it will not change mileage - even to increase it, once the mileage is past 400 or so.

the only cluster repair service I've found is in Australia - meaning shipping expense and delay.

Give North Hollywood Speedometer a call. They are in your backyard and probably the most famous of the shops in this country. They do all kind of resto work on gauges. Keep us posted how you make out.

I'll check. Last time I was there, they had a 4-month backlog. I've had them do a lot of work on mechanical gauges in the past...

VDO Repair was useless. Claimed it was 'impossible to change the miles on the car.'

The way I believe it is done -- I haven't been able to confirm this as changing the miles is rarely done -- the cluster is sent out and the memory chip is replaced with a new one. The cluster can then be written with the desired number of miles.

(I have an instrument cluster from my Boxster at VDO to be repaired. (Actually, I called VDO today and the unit is repaired and on its way back to the dealer to be installed.) I was assured the odometer reading would *not* be disturbed as the memory chip would not be replaced.)

there is a procedure outlined in the shop manual involving dealer reprogramming. I can dig it out so you can take it to them.

I have no fear of working with integrated circuits. I would be happy to pull that memory module off the original cluster & solder to the new, if I knew which one it was...

The reason for replacing the cluster was that the OP had beige dial gauge inserts glued in, and I was getting an oil level 'failure' message that I was tired of seeing.

I can live with the service receipt showing mileage on removed cluster and mileage on installed cluster, but it's just weird for the car to display 1K miles...

ANJ-811 - thank you, I sent them an email

DaveCarrera4 - That would be great. Thanks!
