Best 996 Turbo Exhaust Opinions?
#35
Stef emailed me back today saying this:
"We no longer have the time to build all the different exhaust models for the 996 Turbo but we stil offer the one that I like the best.
The one we offer now is as loud as the stage 2 loud but with the stage 2 the tone had a lower pitched bass sound. The problem with low bass sounds is that you’ll create too much drone, especially on cars with bigger size turbochargers.
The loudness mainly depends on your driving style. The higher the turbo boost at low rpm (2000-3000) the louder the turbo whistle.
So quiet in traffic but the more aggressive you drive the louder and the better it sounds, especially on an X50. Sounds like a real Porsche but not like some loud car.
I don’t have a poper video of it though, I’m sorry.
Regards, Stef"
This might be it!

It seems from my unscientific recollection of people who have EP Stage 1 or EP Stage 2 (just a feel for the number of each based on what I see posted here), more people seem to have the "quiet". It stands to reason that if Stef doesn't have time to produce all the exhausts he has offered over time, and he could pick only one 996 Turbo exhaust to build, he would build the "quiet".
As for the turbo "whistle", I don't find that I hear it very often, and when I do, it is not the dominate sound produced through the exhaust.
As I said, my EP 2 Loud produces it's sound not so much as a function of throttle position, but rather as a function of RPM (even with zero boost). It's a great exhaust and I am very happy with it..

Not really in an annoying sense for me, I find "drone" to be a subjective thing..... the exhaust is loud at times but it never really bothers me.... the whining hum from my R888s at times annoys the hell out of me though
The other thing is the roads out here are so pothole ridden or have trenches across them that the whole car has some creaks and my roof "bounces" as I go from bump to bump...
I also have a lot of health issues like walking pneumonia and a permanent post nasal problem so I cough n splutter as I go along
all in all a cocophany of noise
This video may better represent - Go to 8 mins 45 or so as I drive on a smooth road giving a better indication of my exhaust etc

My experience with a EP stage 2 loud on a bone stock X50 K24 was that it droned badly in the 2.5k range. Gave me a headache after a 15 minute drive, couldn't wait to get out of it. I can see why Stef no longer makes that version. On the other hand, the EP stage 2 loud on my friends 997.1 has zero drone and sounds fantastic. Seems it has to do with the turbos like Stef says..

I've heard lots of Porsches over the years, only ones I think of as really loud are the heavily modified ones, 1000+ hp.

my car came with a techart system. I think it sounds great, not too loud but comes alive as rpm increases. I didn;t buy it but have heard it is pricey.
