Default 100k mile car question about CarFax.

Hi guys,
Looking at another Black 996TT. This one is a bit different from the others I've looked at. It has 100k miles on it which is pretty high in my opinion. It's a 2004 in California.

The Owner number 3 and 4 confuses me. I kind of looks like it spent a lot of time in Dealer Inventory.

Actually it makes no sense to me.
Here is a link to the car

Been auctioned a few times through various dealers. The first owner enjoyed it and put some miles on it. Why not spend another 6-7 grand and get a car with less than 50k miles if you have concerns? Otherwise if you like it get it inspected and see what turns up. I would suspect a lot of things are ready to be replaced/serviced so you may end up dropping a few grand to get it current. Either way you go from the pictures it looks well taken care of. Good luck

I think you would need about 10k more to get something with under 50k miles. I've been looking for one myself and low 40s gets you something with about 55-65k miles. I agree with you though, the OP is not going to find many interested buyers when he goes to resell that in a few years.

Got mine with 28k for 40k so they are out there. Maybe not so much in spring/summer months now though.

I think tips should bring more seeing as they are most certainly better.

I agree with Blswan. If I go to resell it the value will not be as high as a car with lower mileage. I'm also thinking that if I get a PPI done, I would expect that the clutch and all the brakes need to be replaced. That's probably around $6k worth of work there. That being said, I'm willing to put the money into a car if the interior is well maintained.

That's one problem I've come across, the interiors don't seem to hold up very well.

If its been properly maintained i would expect it to have already had much of the service that you guys are talking about already completed. Between 70-100k you would likely have needed to replace

Brakes
Clutch
Coolant tank
Possibly rads
Water pump
Alternator
Spoiler rams
Fuel filter
Spark plugs

These parts would have likely failed after all that mileage.

Thumbs up

I agree, if the car has good records you could probably confirm that many things have already been taken care of vs a lower mileage car that might be due for lots of maintenance. When I was shopping I was actually a little more critical with the cars that had very little mileage for this reason.

I also agree on the interior comment. I wanted a car with a really clean interior (since that's where I would be spending my time) and many of them had very worn looking interiors. I would not dismiss a higher mileage 996T as long as it has records for proper maintenance.

I would also highly recommend a PPI from a trusted shop. I would not buy one without doing so.

All that said, if you do your homework you should be a very happy camper. Truly amazing cars

Best of luck!!

There is no reason to buy a car of this complexity with 100k miles unless that's all your budget will allow. You are better off looking at other cars such as a M3 or many others that are great choices. Read the after posts from the high mile and discount buyers.

better stuck in stop/go traffic... "maybe" lol

my 6spd is currently pushing 126.5K miles and mechanically and in terms of how incredibly fast it is for just having a few bolt ons
i'd put it up against any car here mechanically. cosmetically it does show that mtn road rocks and debris are part of its daily diet
but thats just COSMETIC. i work on it weekly whether it needs it or not. just last night replaced 02 sensors. i'd bet ya it's in better shape mechanically than rmc's car, which sits in a garage 8 months or more a year lol. though we will never know

I understand this statement and don't disagree with it. That being said I plan on doing 90% of the work on this car myself. For reference I've had a 3rd Gen RX7 that I pulled the engine on twice so working on complex cars is not scary to me at all.
I've currently got a 2008 BMW 535i and I'm looking for a weekend play car and occasional track car. Don't need this car to be my DD. Because of this my budget does not allow one of the very nice 45k mile cars.
Oh and I did test drive one of the M3's that you mentioned and the engine is wonderful, but that car feels so big and only gets like 11mpg which to me is crazy even for a play car.
First world problems right?

It would make a nice track car but 100k use will lead to more break downs on average and yes I know some disagree. If its what you want and fits the budget= enjoy!

I sent my contact in California to check out the car to see if it was worth doing a PPI on it. Apparently it sold last night. Some dude drive in and took it for a test drive and said he had to have it.

I wish him the best, there is no way I'm throwing $30k plus at a car with no warranty without a PPI.

The search continues...
