Default 2002 996 Turbo issue... driving me crazy :(

Hi guys,

I have a 2002 Porsche Turbo, I had it serviced at 120k's and it came back limping a little in idle and the PSM light etc came on. I took it to a garage (german) to have a look at it plug it in etc, it came back with a MAF problem. I replaced the MAF two days later my car stalled on a motorway... My fuel pump went! I took it back thinking it was a faulty MAF, the garage said they tried another one and all the readings are fine. So I took it away, again the lights came on and now the turbo is only giving me 0.4bar and limping in idle... We changed the Turbo valves (garage recommended??!) I took the car away the lights are still on and another garage said the computer states it needs a replacement MAF?!

I am just pulling my hair out with it.. The garage is now saying maybe its the engine computer system or Turbo's needs changing... I wanted to know if this would be the case if my lights come on even as I turn the car on, it limps and then it almost stalled again today idling at a light! Its an auto by the way. Would it be a turbo if the issue starts with no boost etc?!

I also checked the hoses etc.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks

In the aviation we call that shot gun troubleshooting... Parts changer are every where. You really need to found a decent shop to take care of your car. These people obviously don't know what they are talking about.... Ask people on this site or 6speed help to found a competent shop. Tell us your location, may be someone can help with a better place to work on your car....

So you have a new fuel pump, maf and PSM light is on. PSM has nothing to do with those things. Maybe your alternator is dying. What are the ODB codes that are coming up?

As alluded to above:
1. Find another shop
2. Post the actual codes (from a PST2, PIWIS or Durametric reader)

The difficulty in some of the idiot lights is they can mean many things

You might have a boost leak. Perform an air intake pressure test.

Is the ABS light on as well as PSM? If so, your symptoms point at a broken harness at the front wheel well. Quite common issue. My car had it. Dealer sells harness retrofit for ~$140. It is a DIY job if you know how to spice wires.

dont even bother guessing or attempting fixes suggested here. nothing wrong in it, but your seeming lack of understanding of the car and the myriad number of things that might be causing these issues, indicate to me that the only good advice you should act upon as noted above is to find a better ( more experienced?/more honest/less clueless?!? ) shop that works regularly on porsche TURBOS.

they cannot in good conscience be actually telling you you may need "turbo's" so something is being lost in translation. just find a good shop in your area or as close as is possible. good luck,..truly.

Yes, take it to another repair garage.

You don't say where you are located. If in the US, contact your local PCA and ask for recommendations for a shop that really knows Turbo's.

I've learned this little trick when I bought my first Mercedes, disconnect the battery for about ten minutes and see what happens. Try that for now and you definitely need a better repair shop.

Thanks guys, I am a Brit based in Dubai.. We do have a Porsche garage here, but they are renowned for just replacing everything and charging through the roof... I took it to a garage that was recommended to me initially. I now have it at another garage which has a Porsche mechanic, but out here you just never know to be honest... Yes both the ABS light is on as well as PSM.

I am getting:

P0103 Hot film MAF sensor (exceeds limit value)
P1109 Input variables, charge measurement (exceeds limit value)
P1107 Oxygen sensing adaption, lower load range, blank 1 (below limit value)
P1108 Oxygen sensing adaption, lower load range, blank 2 (below limit value)
P1250 Boost pressure control (exceeds limit value)

The original garage I took it to that was recommended plugged it in and said he checked the MAF with another one to make sure it wasn't a faulty one he installed, but it definitely feels as if this is the issue or something relating to it for it to just lose power and idle badly to the extent it nearly stalls, but not all the time. But when the lights do come on my bar is at 0.4 and not the usual 0.6/7

Lets hope this Porsche mechanic can shed some light, I am also trying to find another Porsche specialist in this region I can ask.

So latest is the Porsche mechanic I took it to thinks if it is not the MAF (as we found out it is an OEM part not Porsche Original so could be the issue?!) maybe there is an electrical problem, either wiring or the actual ECU unit not sending the right information which he said would be rare but can happen in a 2002 model. Said that is why one of the Turbos are not functioning giving me 0.4bar instead of 0.8, so if its not the electrical wiring he thinks it may be the ECU... Obvs not cheap to replace!

thats a very wide leap from a faulty maf to a potentially failing ecu! there's a lot of fixable stuff in between, and throwing an ecu at the car should be a last resort. not a second!
