Default Retro fit 2002- cup holders into an 01?

I have an 01 with a double DIN head unit. Previous owner did not do the installation the way I would've liked, so I'm going to redo it. I'm wondering if there's a way that I can integrate the late-model cup holders into the installation. I searched around but have not found an article on anyone doing this. To me it looks like there is plenty of room vertically to accommodate the radio in the cupholders.

I can't answer your question but those cupholders are pretty useless unless you like coffee spilling on your stereo, climate control, and shifter. I have no idea why they would put them that high up.
Edit: Obviously there ok for a closed drink but trying to get a full, opened cup of Tim Hortons coffee in and out will result in spillage.

I have a late 2001 and it came with cup holders, I agree they are in a bad spot above radio etc. I do not eat or drink in my cars so its not an issue.

When my car used to be a daily, I choose this one instead of a retro fit. No spills and gets the job done...

if you jam on the brakes, does the open lid come smashing down on your big gulp? ;-)

Ha, not if you use the holder in the back. It holds up the lid
