It was a deal breaker for me.

I've driven enough X50 Turbos to know that for street driving (100% of which is the type of driving I do), the turbo lag really impacted my enjoyment.

Obviously, personal opinion should rule the decision. But for my tastes, throttle response is very important, and K16s are much better in this regard.

Using UMC's tune and no other mod I've seen 1.2 on the boost gauge. The gauge may or may not be accurate but that's what it read. The cars smoother and much quicker in the low to mid range.

i fully agree, that the lag is quite noticeable and can be daunting in street conditions, requiring fast and quick spool. hence my choosing a hybrid 16/24 car over both others i've enjoyed.

again, though pound for pound and all else being equal? ( $$ ) i personally would much rather have a stock(?!) x50 k24 car with the gt2 i/c's, the remap, and the larger turbos, than i would the puny ( lol ) k16's and the stock k16 tune.

In keeping with the topic, does anyone know if Porsche used the same exhaust on the Turbo, Turbo x-50, and Turbo S? I know they look the same externally but were any mods made to the internals?

Well, ask a simple question and get all kinds of information.

Manhattan Motorcars is holding firm to their price which is top of the market so the decision not to buy their X50 was an easy one. Sounds like the X50 is the wrong car for my purposes anyway. I am looking for a street driver so throttle response is important and lag will quickly become a drag. I expect to flash it and add an exhaust system in time, and I expect that to be enough, but I get it that modding can become an obsession. I have a stock 2003 in mind with 20K+ miles, but there are several others to choose from with 10-30K miles and priced from $43-55K.

Many thanks. I learned a lot.

thats why we're all here! to share info and some of us argue lol. but please, at least try an x50 car if one becomes available. an x50 car with a flash is a heck of a car to drive around in as compared to a k16.

good luck, i'm sure you'll end up with a winner.

A tuned Turbo with k16s (like my EVOMS Stage II for example) is also a heck of a car to drive around in (and has better throttle response than the k24s).

And they have been holding to that price for a long time that's why it's still for sale and not sold.

i have no difficulty imagining that. though the x50 car will pull up top.

i see the wisdom of both, that is why i have settled for these many years on the older school hybrid 16/24 turbo setup. it has been said it offers the best of both the k16 as well as the k24's attributes. my car will spool instantly, i swear there is NO lag.

"Up top" in terms of RPM, or in terms of speed?

Show a pic of that 1.2 bar of boost at ~2,500RPM then

All of this being said, specifically relating to lag, would adding a tune AND a more free-flowing exhaust system on an X-50 car help decrease the presence of lag in street driving conditions?

Yes you definitely would see a decrease in lag from these, but probably not a drastic improvement. Strictly from a daily city style driving, it's probably not the best choice for a smaller displacement engine, that doesn't have a high factory set redline. (Small powerband)

First gear takes you to 40 mph or so, and the X50 car doesn't seem to do much work below 15 to 20 mph, unless of course you abuse it by clutch slipping, side stepping and such. After the K24' come online, and first gear is gone, they work better in gears 2 through 6. Unfortunately, in much city, commute driving, they really are not the best choice.
