Default any DIY For engine drop? and how much for labor to drop the motor?

Do you guys remember how much you paid to drop the motor? (thinking ahead since i need to fix the coolant leak) I have 3 indy shops on my list, just would like to get rough estimate how much it should cost me to drop the motor and compare the prices. Or I may wait we get nicer weather and do it myself- Glad I found the leak.

I did it and the tool I got is a Maxjax, an hydraulic table (1000lbs) and the Porsche 996 TT repair manual. Was a very good experience…. Did it alone, but only when lowering the engine I needed someone to help for clearance check… Little bit of info here about parts needed: http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/9...ts-needed.html Thread 45 and 116 for specific part#…. Please remember to do a pressure test of the cooling system before reinstallation!!!!!

thanks jpflip - yeah I dont care if it would take me 2-3 days to do it, its always a good experience to do stuff your self- which always takes double the time and next time is always half of the time.

waiting for indy shops to give me rough estimate --- like someone on 6speed said it should cost around 600+/- but i believe its gonna be like a 1000 bucks

Hummm I cannot really guess what a shop is going to charge you because hours rate can be a factor. But I don't believe anyone can remove and install the engine in less than 10 men hours, reach the 8 fittings and get them welled and reinstall the housings, pressure test, another 5 hours, fill coolant, bleed coolant, fill the oil reservoir etc…. I think we are looking at more than $2000.00 plus parts!!!! My guess is over $3000.00 minimum for the complete job!

yeah sounds about right. I need to fix that leak before it gets worse- I'm going inspect it on sat, maybe i can tell where its leaking from and keep you guys updated, I got quoted $1000 for engine drop and install - not including parts, and i can replace clutch slave cylinder on the way--

Estimates I'm getting from experienced indy Porsche performance pros (failed coolant pipe, so time to drop and get them all pinned) are around $3000 for the engine drop.

Sounds like a position for someone to come out and undercut the competition with pricing! (let me know if such person shows

oh man.. 10 hours? / or 3000.00?! my last work done requiring an engine drop and re-install was itemized as 6 hours for that portion of my work order which included many things. i pay 100.00 per hour shop time labor.

i suppose it helps to know or at least have some level of working knowledge/info of what's involved even when you aren't actually capable of doing the work. i think that tends to impact prices/quotes etc. though it wouldn't surprise me a bit to find that porsche "book time" was ten hours. they tend to eat lunch on the customers dime.

i think folks get regularly screwed on labor charges for these cars.

Probably won't get progressively worse, more than likely will drastically worse, as in from what you have there as a leak, to dumping all coolant.

no matter what it needs to be fixed.

Aso another shop quoted me 1600 for motor drop. he was saying its like 14 hours of work.

I'm thinking it could be seal or something. since its only leaking, next day after system is completely cool--- whatever

had a quote today to drop the engine on my 997 tt and refit it (after sorting a leaking chain guide bolt which is extra labour) Price I was given was 25 hours labour which would be $2600 including taxes! Seems steep?!!!

So the price is 25 hours labour at £85 an hour including VAT. Before anything is fixed. That is engine out, engine in labour
