Default Cleaning cosmoline off the engine?

Anyone have suggestions on an effective way of cleaning the cosmoline off the engine case? Any products that work? My engine is split and I'd like to clean up the case prior to reassembly...

Thx...

There was a post here a while back where someone used dry ice as a blasting agent. Pics were impressive

Why in the World would you want to clean it?! I would add more if I could! It's there to protect the case from surface rust. Would it be better to have a rusty looking engine?
Scratch all that : who cares how it looks down there?! LOL!

Surface rust on aluminum? LOL
I was told mineral spirits should work. If you are concerned about the aluminum oxidizing, you can purchase a clear aluminum protectant from a marine store.

I used to have alum. engine parts -- heads, manifold, etc., -- cleaned at an automotive machine shop. These can't be cleaned in the same tank as the cast iron parts. The cleaning solvent used in the cast iron cleaning tank will damage (dissolve) the alum. parts.

This removes not only any thing on the outside of the castings but in the passages in the castings as well. But afterwards you have to run a gun cleaning rod through every passage to ensure there is not debris in the passage. All threads holes must be cleaned too.

If you do not want to have the engine castings professionally cleaned you can remove the cosmoline by a number of cleaners. I've used Gunk the stuff in the aerosol can which can then be removed with hot water. At other times I've used diesel fuel as a solvent. If you are able to deal with the fire risk kerosene is another good cleaner.

I've had great results using BrakeKleen - but do it outside the fumes are horrible. Dissolves the cosmoline and evaporates away.

Good tip - I'm going to try this on some dried up sap. It does note that it will stain aluminium unless properly diluted!

I would not let it sit on anything either. Meaning, make sure you wipe off what ever it is you have cleaned and try not to leave any residual cleanser. I am telling you though, this stuff really works.

This is the pic of my 996 Turbo; I had the same company ( TuneRS , in Coral Springs, FL) cryo-detail my 997 Turbo. I have no affiliation with the vendor, and as I mentioned in the Concours thread on dry-ice engine detail, it may not be a good idea for those drivers in the cold weather climes, due to driving on salt and other de-icing chemicals.

Having said that, the results are worth it to me. I exposed myself to enough gasoline, carb cleaner, spray paint, used motor oil and other hazardous environments between the ages of 16-40, that I have pretty much decided against trying to save a few $$ doing this type of work myself.
