Sanity check - 19" wheels
Hello chaps, before I spend a shed load of cash I just wanted to double check that my research is correct. I have an '05 Turbo S, currently with original 18" hollow spokes (8" and 11"). Absolutely fine but aesthetically not my cup of tea. I've always liked black faces and silver rims and am quite taken by the Black Satin BBS CH-Rs (http://www.lkperformance.co.uk/wheel...39&rim_size=19). Unfortunately they don't do these in my desired widths at 18" but they do at 19". So I am considering the following:
Front 19x8.5 ET 51 w/ 235/35 R19 Michelin Pilot Sport 2, N2
Rear 19x12 ET 45 w/ 305/30 R19 Michelin Pilot Sport 2, N2
According to my calculations (and confirmed on TireRack), these tyre sizes are within 2.4% - less than the consensual 3% to avoid front/rear diff issues. My question is, am I going to be able to fit these without bodywork mods. and/or spacers? Discuss ....

The rear wheels on a 996 awd should rotate faster than the fronts in order that there is torque transfer to the front axle via the viscous coupling. With the setup you suggest, the tyre revs per mile as reported by Tirerack are as follows:
FR 817 RR 788 which is 29 revs per mile faster at the front than the rear which is not a problem on a 997 because of different diff ratios front and rear. I believe users of 19 inch wheels on the 996 get round this by using 315/25 R19 tyres on the rear which have a rev per mile rating of 824 which puts the balance back in the right direction and also with a diameter of 25.2" is a better height for the 996.

Yes, you need 315/25 and 235/35.

I third the above advice. Tirerack advice of front and rear sizes for the 996TT (matching set) was different than any tire size set ups I've seen. If you look at 315 sizes from rears then it gives you 215s for fronts, or look at 235s and it gives you 305s for rears, etc.
I looked into this last week. I saved my conclusion on my ipad...which is not near me now.
These are 315/25 and 235/35. HRE p40. Diameters are like 25.0-3" vs 25.5" which is within a 2%, and the revolutions are higher on the rears. And the rotational mass has to be considered, hence the sizes recommended.
My rears are too low for my taste with H&R coils, so I'm looking into different suspension.

Excellent, some good feedback here and yes I'm on stock suspension. Taking all this on-board I've recalculated for 8.5 and 11 inches:
Circum = ((Dia * 25.4 + 2 * Width * Aspect / 100) / 25.4) * PI
RPM = 1760 * 36 / Circum "Revolutions Per Mile"
Standard:
18x8 ET50 225/40 RPM803.94
18x11 ET45 295/30 RPM807.74
Possible:
19x8.5 ET51 225/35 RPM800.30
19x11 ET56 305/25 RPM806.60
This all looks pretty plausible, my only concern now is the rear offset but I guess a suitable spacer (8mm?) should push the wheel out more?

i sure wouldn't order/buy aftermarket wheels and THEN need spacers! unless they were used/great deal, etc. but ordering from scratch, get them with a proper offset so as to avoid spacers altogether. mo betta.
i gave up on 19's within the first year of running them. harsh and rubbed at hard lock. gt2 sizes can not be beat.

Don't bother trying to calculate revs per mile from the tyre diameter, these are obtained experimentally by the tyre manufacturer and may not match the calculated result and may vary between manufacturers.

..and to you.
without a doubt I love the look of mine best with the 18" GT2 setup filling the arches....
...but as a driver, I am most impressed with the car in the stock 18" set up...
I've thought about 19"s but with the passive suspension of the 996 i think I'd be losing out on the the sidewall flexibility that's designed and built into the 18"s.
