Default Starting Issue

I'm having an intermittent starting issue on my 996tt. Haven't had any problems with the key getting stuck in the ignition but I decided to replace the ignition switch anyway since that is a common issue. Replaced it today and and I'm still having the same problem, turn key to run and I get all the dash lights and radio but when I go to crank nothing. It takes a few random cranks of the key to start. Maybe a problematic clutch switch?? Any help is appreciated thanks

Fuel hose split at the top of the fuel pump? If you search you'll find info on the issue.

few ideas:
-clutch switch as mentioned, try bypassing it by connecting the two wires
-wires at starter
-battery connections
-engine to chassis ground
-starter itself

"when you go to crank" = "nothing" as in no power to starter? ....or it cranks/turns over, but does not start? if the latter i would check out fuel pump as p556 mentioned. if there is NO cranking, it would seem electrical in nature, and not the switch. you will usually have some indicators that the starter and or alt/reg is going bad. if thats the case check connections first, then test your elec components.

alts go bad more often than starters in my experience, but any one of these can leave you stranded. but i'm ruling out the alt for now,.. based upon your post.

Sound like classic bad starter symptoms.

+2 - What 993GT said, (check clutch interlock switch, starter connections, engine-to-chassis & battery ground points).

If no joy, then check the starter itself.

Thanks for the tips gonna check the clutch switch then engine grounds. When it cranks it starts right up strong with no issues just from time to time I turn the key and it doesn't crank at all. Similar to if u tried to start the car without pressing the clutch.

I am also showing good voltage when the engine is off and when running on my battery gauge if that helps

You may want to check the starter relay if the clutch switch checks out okay.

I had a similar issue. I changed out my clutch switch and ignition switch and that solved it. I dont think starters just die. My boxsters starter made noise upon start up when it started to fail.

Are you sure you changed the correct clutch switch? There are two. A grey one and red and black one. The grey one starts the car the other is for cruise control. I guess if thats ok then get the starter checked. Does your car make a noise when starting or does it take longer than usual to crank? Could be electrical as i have heard of ground cables wearing away. At that point i would see an indie or dealer or check for codes with durametric. Unfortunately you may have ruled out the cheap fixes. I wonder if it could be the ignition mechanism even though your key doesn't stick.

Every starter that has died on me, except one, did just stop working. They get a dead spot on the brush contact and whenever the starter armature is in that spot the electrical circuit is interrupted.

my 'pin-point' bet is the starter wire(main power or signal) is loose or corroded
