I went through the same thought process and decision process when I sold my 996 C4S. I ended up buying a 997.1 TT cabriolet. I considered many different cars, and I ultimately decided that the 997.1 TT made the most sense to me. I found a car with a 6MT and PCCBs in an unusual color, which is exactly what I wanted. The 997 represents a very different driving experience than my 996 did, and I don't just mean the engine. The car handles very well and feels like a 911, but it is also much more of a "luxury cruiser" than my 996 was, especially with the PASM set on the softer setting. I've spent quite a bit of time behind the wheel of a 997.2 C4S as well as a 991 C4S. They all represent a different experience, and you really have to try them all and choose the one that suits you the best.

There's no "wrong" decision here...

i would ask yourself if you truly need Porsche's AWD ? will it be a daily driver ? Do you want more bells and whistles in the cockpit ? of course we can debate until the sun comes up, but in the end, take both out for a ride and see where you belong in the land of Porsche.

I started out 997 as well, and then found myself giddy over a 996 GT2 of which is now what I think my favourite and am giving serious thought to pursuing one. But would I be happy in a 996TT ? Of course, but still 996 GT2 is boss imho.

There will compromises so again, sit , drive and decide. Either one will definitely put a smile on your face. It certainly did for me.

After some time and thought, I am now between 997 TT and 996 TT... It has been a while, and I got lost in 964 outlaw world for some time. I actually sat down with a few local shops and mocked up build sheets, but it doesn't make sense for several reasons. Problem is now buy 996 TT and save some money or buy a 997 TT and get some nicer creature comforts etc...

What are the main differences from the 996 TT to the 997 TT as far as maintenance costs, reliability, resale, drive feel?

I don't think I would ever get hurt with a 996TT as the purchase prices are pretty low and from what I've read the Mezger engines are near bullet proof. I certainly stand to lose more money with a 997 TT since prices are much higher, and I am slightly concerned that they are a bit more dealer reliant and I am not fond of being married to the dealership for every little thing.

I know there are plenty of threads out there on the subject, but I'm always open to hearing peoples present thoughts on the topic.

I guess it depends on your budget but in my opinion the price of the 997tt is not that much higher than a 996tt. I prefer the 996tt over the 997tt personally and is why I bought one. The maintenance would be similar as far as do it yourself or taking to dealer/indy. The resale figures are easy to see by watching sale ads. The 996tt will be going up in price so now is a good time to buy. Reading between the lines I would say the 997tt is the car for you.

I appreciate the it, but I'm actually leaning towards the 996TT! I'm an analog guy and I'm not too fond of bells and whistles of the newer cars! I also think the 996TT is better first Porsche for me...cost is incredibly low for the amount of car you get from the 996TT. My buddy just picked up a 1 of 1 996TT RUF and I really enjoyed driving it.

Only vehicles I want to drive before pulling the trigger are the 996 GT3 and 997 GT3...doubtful I'll go that route, but I'd like to be as thorough as possible before taking the trek, as I am a guy that keeps things for a while. Any experience with a GT3/2 as a daily driver or are they a bit too rough? I live in Miami, lots of stop and go, and probably stupid to daily a GT3...

you're no more "tied to a dealer' with a 997 than with a 996. the mezger engined 997 turbo's 06-08 are out of warranty/cpo coverage so thats a non issue. there isn't that much difference beyond cosmetic and maybe vtg's btw the 96 and the 97t and the added "creature comforts" to which you allude are few.

i'd buy a mid 50/75k mile 997t for hi 60's/low 70's and avoid altogether the low mileage 996 turbos that ( -/+ 10k$ ) are close to that in price.

Very difficult to pinpoint which car is the best fit...For some odd reason I'd consider pdk if I went 09 TT and up. Pre PDK era, only manual trans. I want so desperately to turn my lexus driving wife into a porsche believer, and the only way is pdk. In all honesty, even though I live in a city with terrible traffic, I'll still end up going manual. I guess I'll dedicate some time to looking out for a 996TT, 997TT, 996 gt2/3...and I'd like look into a 997 gt3 as well (albeit a bit of a reach) and go from there. I'm afraid I'll fall in love with the 997 gt3 though!!! Thoughts on what will hold its value best or possibly appreciate?

Which one? Since there are hardly any of them in the first place.
