Default Piston and Liners?? What are the options?

So far I only see Mahle in relation to piston and liner setup......

What other options are out there?

Can I also run my stock pistons with a steel liner? Who make sonly steel iron liners? If so do I have to modify my piston in anyway?

Since the Mezger engine has not manifested many of the issues the NA engines have there is -- to my knowledge at any rate -- no real cottage industry of Mezger engine rebuilders.

However, there are several NA engine rebuilders who offer new cylinders for the NA engines -- machining away the old cylinder material and making way for new liners/cylinders -- who may also be able to do the same for the Mezger engine.

You'll have to check the ads in Excellence and Panorama regarding any engine rebuilders that handle these engines and check with them what liner options there are for these engines.

Off hand, I do not think you can use the stock pistons with steel/iron liners. The stock pistons come coated with some kind of cast iron material which is intended to be compatible with the stock factory cylinder liner material which is *not* steel/iron.

Also, I seem to recall at least one Porsche engine rebuilder coming out dead set against steel/iron cylinders in these engines.

Plenty of Mezger rebuilders. I plan on doing the Mahle 3.8 kit when I rebuild mine.. No need to reinvent the wheel..

from his examples, and from all i've gathered, more builds occur in the quest for more power than do out of failure or *necessity*. i suppose that's what i was celebrating lol.

i would LOVE a 3.8 lol let alone a ( dare i say it.... ) vivid still has that 4.0 engine lying around for 10k LOL. some brave soul.. who knows. it would be a monster.
