Default Interesting coolant question

I have a friend who is changing the radiators on his car after one of them failed. Seeing how I changed the coolant once on my old 2001 996 Turbo he asked me how much it took. I put in 27 to 28 liters in mine - 50/50 mixture of water and Pentosin. He went to the dealer and they looked it up and told him he only needed somewhere around 15 liters. He drained it all out of his car and got under 15 liters out. This was even after he jacked it up and put clean water in until it started draining out the front radiators. He replaced the expansion tank as well.

His car is the same year, same spec (turbo, manual, etc.) as my car. Even his owners manual says the coolant capacity is 27 liters. What gives? Why would his car have so much less coolant than mine?

I recently did the same job on my 01' and experienced the same as your friend; purchased significantly more than I ended up requiring as per manual. I drained the front rads and the transfer pipes leading to the front as well. I suspect that there was still some trapped in the engine block and in misc. tubing around the car.

I suspect andrew54 is right. When I did mine I drained the engine and removed the hoses connecting the engine plumbing to the tubes running fore and aft that are behind the transmission. I got considerable more fluid even after I had drained the radiators and tank.

Are you confusing the fact that Pentosin is a brand name (like AC Delco) and that they make coolant and hydraulic fluids?

I guess so...LOL! I was just hoping you don't put power steering Pentosin in your radiators.
Anyway,do you know that Porsche uses Pentosin antifreeze in a rebranded container? I wouldn't use any other antifreeze except Porsche.
FWIW...
