So for 5000 they are taking engine out, both heads off and reassembling, seems rather inexpensive. How many miles on the car?

I would be curious to see if this car had a coolant fitting failure recently? I was looking thru old pictures and have a similar picture. Other bank (number 5 cylinder)..

Sorry blockhed, the car has no mods with 49,000 miles.

BTW, I know many of you have suggested I walk away, however it cost me nothing to investigate this further and the owner is planning on doing the investigation and repair. I will see how it goes and will let you know the outcome.

My last Porsche was a 964 C4 and I only had to contend with oil leaks of which there were plenty.

Hope it works out for you and if you get it fixed and the owner is paying it is one less thing you'll have to worry about if you end up purchasing. I paid for a PPI a few years back and it revealed an oil leak at top of motor I too would have pursued purchase if owner would help out with costs for dropping motor to get to answer for leak but he was not willing so I had little choice but to walk away as without owner reducing cost of vehicle or paying to fix leak purchase became not worth it .

If that diagnosis the head gasket is leaking due to overheating that's a serious problem. An overheated engine, one that has overheated enough to compromise head gaskets, is in my opinion one to be avoided.

I have to point out that while the current owner is paying for the investigation and repair, if you buy the car after it is repaired it is you that is assuming the risk that the diagnosis is accurate and that any collateral damage from the overheating was confined to that head gasket.

Macster, I relay do not believe this is as a result of overheating, but a bad gasket, however my plan is to ensure that the work will be warrantied, even though paid for by the owner, and that the shop has tested the surfaces for any warping.

The owner is honest and up front. He discovered this problem and not me through my PPI.
He wants to ensure it will be repaired before selling.

I do not want to get saddled with a $20,000 future bill.

There is guys running with 600+ awhp and so on and no one has leaky gasket unless they have a sh*t tune. Most of these cars hold together well and this is an odd issue but then again my one buddy had his chain snap a day into ownership and he had to build a motor.

Well folks I went ahead and purchased this car yesterday. There was no leak from the head gasket. A previous owner had a coolant leak from above and there were remnants of that at the base of the engine as was described by one of the posters here. This was determined by a certified Porsche mechanic. He pressure tested the coolant system under cold and hot conditions. Cold for 24 hours with no leak down.

2005 Porsche Turbo S convertible 6 speed, 50,000 miles, new tires and spoiler hydraulics before purchase.

Enjoy it. These are great cars! I would look into what he did to fix the coolant leak. As you probably already know the coolant pipes can be a weakness in these cars.
