Reno, thanks for the list. That's a big help.

I was a little surprised by the dealership as well, but it's because the car is on consignment. They said any repairs or inspections need to be paid for by the seller or buyer. Supposedly if they owned the car they would have repaired the misc issues. Rather annoying to be honest. I would rather deal directly with the owner or just the dealership. Good news is there seems to be a decent amount of private party TT's for sale. But I'll be patient and take my time.

+1 for taking your time. the last thing you need is to stumble across the perfect car, when youve already settled on an average one.... its kind of like a marriage. lol

Dont know why this one hasn't sold yet... i think its super sexy, and a great price. I have no affiliation, but would have been all over it if I was closer, and needed a second 996tt

Hi Manitou,
Can you elaborate on what else this car needed? I was curious in it. You can post it or pm me. I talked them down to 41,900.00 btw. Is this a good value or pass?

I was looking a 997 tt but was thinking about trading my rs4 for it.

Thanks

I've been reading a lot on Rennlist about some of the specifics to look for, but I've got some additional questions. Just as a frame of reference, it's a Silver 2004 996TT with about 53k miles.

The paint was is good condition with several minor rock chips, however on the bottom 2 inches of the front bumper the paint looked like a spider web. This was the section above the black plastic lip. Is that normal?

The car is on consignment with the dealership, but another potential buyer paid for a PPI at the dealership. So the head tech walked through the PPI with me and the service history in detail and pointed out what was just repair and what he would still recommend. It was very thorough, however, would you still suggest an outside shop to perform a PPI?

For the typical 996TT with 50k miles and in the $40k-$45 range, should I expect all known/obvious issues to have been addressed or should I still expect some items to need to be address after purchasing? For example, with this car the clutch slave cylinder was just replaced, but the front differential seals are slightly leaking and the sun roof only tilts up. Should I expect those issues to be addressed at this price range?

Thanks for any suggestions.
No- don't accept those issues. Keep looking on Autotrader etc.
I just bought a mint 01, 58k mileage car with no issues for $36,250 including Evoms stage two kit, Techart exhaust, Champion 19 inch RG5 wheels, coil over suspension, oem carbon fiber interior with oem sport seats & updated nav/stereo. They are out there keep looking.
Good luck

^^ + Tiptronic. To the OP, keep in mind that tips cost a bit less than manual equipped cars.

Dsouth,

The head technician mentioned the front diff seals were leaking, the moonroof only tilted and did not open, the turbo's had been modified (not exactly sure what was done), the engine appeared to have a lot of grime built up on the bottom of the block which could be an engine leak, the after market wheels were in terrible shape, and the count for the over-revs >7250 were over 4000, which seems really high.

I pretty much ruled out 997's because most have been $75-$85K range which is more than I'm willing to spend. However, while looking I found a higher mileage 997TT (59K miles) for the low $60's. After talking with my wife I'd be willing to swing $65k for a 997 that is in good condition.

My plan is to keep which ever car I get for the next 3-5 years and then trade up. I will probably put 2-3K miles per year on the car and I plan on taking good care of it. No track days, no abuse, no modifications, and proper maintenance.

So, what do you guys think is a better way to go? Higher mileage 997TT or lower mileage 996TT for $10-$20k less? I feel like the 996TT's are currently a really good deal, but I love the look and little bit of extra refinement of the 997.

997 gets my vote. Sure it may cost a little more now but the gratification is SO worth it. The 997's are nicer inside and out IMO.

Purely subjective. I prefer the interior of the 996 and think for the money it's still a better deal

I definitely like the look of the 997TT more; $25k more, no. But a 2008 997TT is six years younger than a 2002 996TT.

I honestly would not trade even up for a 997tt but to each his own.

I owned a 997.1 (2009) for a few weeks and flipped it to my neighbour who collects cars like dust. I now have a 2005 TTS and prefer it because I wanted to mod my car.

For stock I would go 997.1

My car/s are/were 6MT

Well, talk about a 180. I ended up test driving a new Cayman S and immediately fell in love. So, I drove home with a new Cayman S last night.

I never felt completely comfortable driving the 996TT. To be honest, it felt a lot like the 930T I had 10 years ago but a little more refined. The 997TT would have been better, but it was going to be a stretch to afford the 997TT plus keep a decent budget for maintenance and repairs. I ended up with a Porsche 100k mile warranty and 4 years of maintenance with the Cayman.

I completely underestimated the Cayman. It instantly put a huge smile on my face. It's like driving a go-kart and the PDK gearbox makes it feel like a video game.
