01 996 TT - Daily driver - Northeast
Hi Guys,
I've had my eye on a really nice 01 996 Turbo for a little while now and have been a little hesitant to pull the trigger, simply because i'm not 100% positive that I'd like to make it my daily driver year round. I understand that the 996s and up were made to be driven, and driven alot, and by no means do I want it to be a garage queen, but i'm just a little nervous on damaging the engine overtime as my commute is not exactly that far.
Right now I drive about 2.3 miles to the train, that's way to little so I plan on driving to the next station closer to the City which is 7.6 miles away from my house, literally just so I can enjoy driving my new potential car. So that's about 15miles a day, 75 a week, plus will definitely be using it on the weekends for trips and just pleasure rides as much as I can. Does the 15 miles a day seem way too short for a turbo? Ideally my plan is to get a beater station car that I can drive to and from the station ,and drive it in the winter, so just I don't even need to worry about this, but If I did decide to make it my daily commuter even though its such a short distance, is it at all do-able/realistic? Or am I asking for trouble.
I'm located in Armonk NY, so we do get the extreme temperatures, freezing and heavy snow at times in the winter (though that means i'm working from home), and 90 + humidity in the summer. I plan to obviously garage it but it would be siting outside at the station parking lot all day. The more I write this the more it sounds like I need to factor a station car into my budget, what do you all think?
Thanks
Jason

I know most will disagree but I would not want to use the 996tt for the use you describe= I would get a car that didn't matter to me incase of door dings being left out in the weather all day etc. That said buy one for days off best sports car for the money.

I could never use mine as a station car. I'd say "that's just me," but I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in thinking that.
Get the car, and let your first "accessory" for it be another cheap/reliable used car that lets your 996 stay home on weekdays.

HAH - I like Panchosouth's comment...made me laugh, but very true.
Vendetta - I agree with your thinking, I need to be able to factor in a cheap/reliable beater into my budget if i'm going to go this route. The car is just too nice looking to let it sit outside all day

You'll get some ahole to ding your door when you drive it on the weekend to so drive it as much as you can and enjoy it. I tend to drive it more monthly then most guys here do yearly

Are you trying to keep it as perfect as you can for the next guy?
But seriously, I will drive mine in anything (including snow) but parking lots send shivers up my spine.
Maybe be get there early enough to find a spot where only one side is exposed?
Having said that, I never regret driving the car as it's so much fun.

I drive mine to HD, Waldbaums etc but park it a mile away at the back of the car park away from any cars. My car is never left at movie theatres, train stations etc... had 2 of my BMW's wrecked twice in the last year at public NY car parks

Don't get me wrong. I frequently drive mine for errands to various hardware stores in my raggedy and stained project clothes.
Just that mass public parking lots are the worse of the worse and I don't like to subject any of my cars to that, let alone my porsche.

This is my 6 P car that i have owned, one through five where all garage queens. Two years ago In a matter of 45 minutes , the waters from Hurricane Sandy hit and destroyed three of my cars( including a 997 s). This year located a 996 turbo x50, and have been driving it as much as I possibly can. We try to plan and keep things pristine, but life is short and although we have our plans.....
Enjoy life it's to short and at times very unpredictable

I couldn't agree more but keeping a nice car at a train station all week every week is just asking for abuse= I know I have lived in the city and my wife took the train.

I agree with the posts above...life it too short.
I put about 25k on the pcars per year. But, i only drive it to areas where I know I can park without worrying. Train station would not be one of them, especially if they are like the ones around here in PA.

While I got mine for commuter duty, it's 25 miles from the garage at home to (mainly) inside the warehouse when I get out there. Sure, I will make stops along the way coming home, even deliver product if it's a quick 2-3 case dropoff (vending business).
But day-in-and-out at a public parking lot? Even I wouldn't subject more than a ~$10K car to that.

I daily mine nearly everyday of the year, however I don't know if I'd do daily station duty. If anything buy the car + $1,000 beater for the station. Switch it up between the 2 and enjoy the 996 afterwork/weekends.
The $1-3,000 you spend on a beater will pay for itself in keeping the 911 safer
