I believe it was most prevalent in years 01-02 but have seen it in talked about in posts from all years.

All years and all versions K16 and k24 turbos (X50/turboS).

Make sure you test for this as it is a bit expensive to repair. Mine was done under warranty fortunately.

how would one go about testing 2nd gear popout? I can only assume it would happen more under load or heavy gas then suddenly let off something like that but just guessing here.
I'll bet there are many threads too on this so I'll start searching

Early production '03 had the issue (08/2002)

I'd also make the recommendation to test the car on a downhill road, in second gear accelerate and then get off the gas and coast, apply throttle and coast.. It will pop out of gear with this method.

Testing didn't help me.
It has popped out maybe 4 times in 5,000 km/6 months since I bought it.
Yes, coasting.

How many miles does it take for this problem to appear? Does it come on fairly early in about 20k miles or later on at around 50k miles.

Do a search here and on 6spd about detent and ball bearing fix. I do not believe there is a certain mileage that can be pinpointed for pop out.

Wanted to add these fixes only work on occasion and usually the trans needs to be repaired internally.
