So I took the alternator out and dropped it off at an automotive electrical repair shop.

They indicated the pulley clutch felt warn out.

Anyways, will wait to see what they determine is the problem.

Car is 6 speed, should it have a clutch pulley?

Typically, when you purchase a rebuilt alternator does it include the pulley or do they expect you to transfer the old pulley to the rebuilt alternator?

You are the first person I have met that knows why a clutch pulley is used. Thanks for the info.

Finally put the rebuilt unit in. Bearings, pulley, regulator.

At idle with just daytime running lights on I am at 13V.

At idle with everything on, low beam, high beam, wipers, blower, heated seats at 12.3V.

Took it out for a boot and wow how I have missed her....I have been driving a 2001 Golf TDI for the last 2 wks.

Punko - those numbers are low, mine with everything on is above 13volts at idle, and with just lights on is around 13.8 volts. You may want to put a volt meter on the battery terminals themselves and see if your gauge meter is correct, if so you may want to see if your battery is up to snuff.

Regulator sometimes does strange things. Also the onboard indicator is not the best but I agree, a check with a voltmeter should give you more accurate vale!
