Default Oil change fiasco - please help

So I just brought my 03 turbo in to a new shop for some work. The INDY is in central Connecticut and came recommended on this site, so I thought I'd give them a shot.

Among the things I had them do was install PSS10s, GT3 shifter, new 710N diverter valves, and perform a major service including new coilpacks (I only have 20K miles on the car, but wanted to do a major service to get a good baseline moving forward). Kevin recommended the diverter valves and coilpacks when I got his tune last year, so I thought I'd have it done.

Anyway, I've read a bunch about oil recommendations on the site, and asked the shop to put in 5w50 mobil 1 full synthetic. They said it would take a day to get that oil and I should just use 15w50 because it was better for our cars, but that they had 5w50 racing oil in another brand and they'd send me a pic for my approval before using it.

So I called back later in the day, and they used the other brand without sending the pic or getting my approval.

On picking up the car yesterday night, I still could not figure out the name of the brand as they couldn't locate the box it came from --- I asked for an extra quart in case I need to top it off between changes (I think the guy mentioned Brad Penn)---, but I clearly heard it was "half synthetic." I would never have approved this.

At that moment, I told him they would need to redo the oil change and he agreed and said to call on Monday to schedule something.

When I got home, I did some research on Brad Penn and couldn't find any 5w50 half synthetic racing oil, only 20w50, so I'm not sure that was the brand---any thoughts on this?

Until now, the car has only had 0w40 Mobil 1 full synthetic. Based on the above, was hoping someone could help me understand a few things:

(1) Will half synthetic 5w50 oil damage my engine if I drive the car for a week (or two) before I get back to change for them to change the oil?

(2) What if it really is 20w50 half synthetic oil, will this damage the engine and should I push to have it changed immediately?

(3) Can they effectively change the oil back to 0w40 or 5w50 full synthetic (assuming I can get it) while I wait for the car, OR to effectively do this, do we need to let it drain overnight?

(4) What needs to be changed? Oil, filter, and oil plug---anything else?

(5) Should I go back to this garage to have them fix it, or should I just go to the dealer today and have the garage pay for the cost to correct the work?

Much appreciate your thoughts!!!

You'll be fine.

I suggest you order 2 cases of Mobil 5W50 on line today from Amazon and take the oil in with you. Then you know what you're getting. As long as your indy is ok with that arrangement.

Another good oil would be Mobil 5W40 Turbo Diesel. You can buy that in large jugs at WalMart. This is also a "Kevin" approved oil. Long term I would not run a partial synthetic in your car, nor a 15 or 20w50 viscosity. Unless you operated in the desert and did a ton of track miles.

Again. You are fine. Order the oil today. Have it next week. Schedule your re-oil change. Filters too. Make sure they drain for at least 30 minutes. Hot oil. Sumps too.

Agree just get it redone at the shop that did your other work if everything else turned out to your liking. They should do it for no labor charge and for sure no what you want from now on lol. You should consider doing it yourself in future as its easy and a good way to keep an eye on things.

Not a huge deal, don't sweat it (if they put coolant in your oil - then you should freak out!). Have them change it to the oil of your liking, move on.
In the future possibly buy and supply oil that you buy on your own (or learn how to do it yourself).
Inspect your filter at each change.
Consider doing a Blackstone analysis to establish a baseline - as it sounds like you are interested in staying on top of your cars health.

theyre talking about 5/50 pennrite. ask if thats what it is/was? and if so youre fine. it's full synth oil, and good stuff. certainly fine for the car.

"perform a major service including new coilpacks (I only have 20K miles on the car, but wanted to do a major service to get a good baseline moving forward"

... was a very wise thing to do. good on ya ( sorry pennrite is aussie i think? lol )

Default Mobil 1 5w-50

You can get it here as well: http://www.avlube.com/mobil15w50.html

The link says "15w-50," but it will take you directly to Mobil 1 5w-50).

I agree with "02996ttx50 I would find out exactly what went in. If it was the Penrite they look to have some good oils. I was ordering some of their premium 0-50 full synthetic with 1250ppm zinc levels for my next change. Maybe it's what you got,

^ i found a place on the left coast that actually has it in stock in 5qt jugs. but i needed oil before i could order. but was also going to use the 5/50 penrite for the reasons you cite.. plus the last/latest ( lol ) oil thread in which kevin also mentioned it was "ok" to use IIRC? hope i'm not mistaken(?) about that part.

when i spoke with them re 5/50 they had no 0/50? but who knows.....

Penrite only comes in 5w-40 and 0w-50 and not 5w-50, its not Porsche approved product.
I'd stick with Mobil1 5w-40 or 5w-50 for long term use.

i think you're right jim about the 5/50. my bad. here's what my local supplier has in stock:

I carry the Prem 0W50, Prem 5W60. Or you can go with the Race 5W30, and racing 10W40

Well this was my experience with Penrite, go to post #165. I would never use their products again.

I used Penrite 0w-50 and my engine rattle was much louder than it was with the M1 5w-50. I used it thinking it was the higher zinc oil, the new batch oils weren't available anywhere even though it was advertised on their website.
So my issue was the oil and the supplier plus they didn't follow through with what they agreed to do for me, so l just dumped the new oil and replaced with with Mobil.
