Most high end cars don't even have a spare wheel of any description in Europe, the foam kit is useless and so its an ideal location as low as possible

You probably mean "newer" high end cars. Older high end cars had spares (see my high end 2002 996 Turbo).

Anyway...do you personally think not having a spare is a good idea?

Well that's money in the bank.

I assume you've never used the air bags either, right?

even the early 911s had it low down in the front wing
Yes, I remember that. I had one, but those old early cars did not have radiators and coolant lines.

Yeah this is my question as well.

Obviously the space saver spare fits where it is stowed, but once your remove the 18" wheel/tire from the car, where does it go? Does it fit back in the frunk? If not, why have the spare if you can't take your damaged wheel/tire with you?

I changed a tire on a 997 once and the original tire would not fit in the frunk. Had to put it on the seat. This was several years ago and on a 997 C2 not a 996 turbo, so that may not be relevant, but it raises the question.

There should be a large plastic bag in your trunk to put your wheel in and then carry it in the passengers seat, not sure if you can get into the back seat if you have a passenger with you.

They probably wouldn't be too happy but maybe squeeze your passenger into the back seat, as I dont think you can get the larger rear wheel into the back.

lol this thread turned into comedy. Didn't know Jerry went by the username Dock

That said. The airbag can cause more harm then good...it just depends whom you ask. The 996 T spare wheel does NOT work if you have the PCCB's. Anyways to each their own. Some find it helpful, some find it useless. Just like everything else in life.

Do I think Porsche could have put the battery elsewhere ? Yes I do think so. Sometimes things get overlooked. Sometimes it has to do with cost, sometimes it has to do with what is easiest.

I enjoy these types of threads. It's seemingly minutiae but it's interesting nevertheless.

Putting the tire inside the cabin makes me think a plug kit and inflator with some sealant as backup is probably a better option. There's always the telephone when all else fails.

I have to admit it would need to be an emergency situation for me to put the tire in my car, bag or no bag lol= to much of a chance of scuffing leather etc!
