What kind of preventive maintenance should I do to used motor prior to installation?
Car is 02 996 turbo w/ 90k miles. Long story short, I blew my motor up couple month ago and bought a used motor w/ 53k miles out of 01 to replace mine.
Question that I have is what should I replace/prep prior to swap? As far as I understand there is no complication using 01 motor on 02?
I was going to replace rear main seal. Anything else? Since trans will be out too so anything on trans?
TIA.

Burning Brakes
Plugs, coils, cam solenoid brackets, coolant hoses, have the coolant fittings welded, GBox detent for the transmission, fuel filter, bypass valves, all fluids.
Now I have to ask, how did you blow up your motor?

Here are a couple of examples why one might proactively replace these items-

Um, because these items are easier to R&R when the motor is out, and tend to fail?

I'm sure you'll make the right decision according to your budget of what needs to be changed and what doesn't...

I really don't know what caused motor to go. I was on full boost(0.6bar) and right around 5k rpm, lost oil pressure and pouring smoke out of tail pipe. Just drained oil and chunk of metal came out of it. I'm assuming maybe spun the bearing? Car should have stock tune.
Is anything on trans that need to be replace? like throw out bearing or any seals? I just don't want to tear into it again for at least while. Reason I'm asking this question is I don't know any history of used motor that I got from yard.
Paulunm: You mentioned bypass valve, are you talking about oil pressure valve or something else?

You could do a full clutch and associated parts.... (slave, accumulator, throw out bearing, trans seal, RMS) Slippery slope here...

What I did while the engine was out:
Rods, heads, sleeves, piston rings, lifters, cup oil pump, larger head bolts (machined block), GT3 intake, EMBC, turbos, exhaust manifolds, intercoolers, clutch, LSD, Took out the FWD system (put a gt2 tranny main shaft w/GT2 gears and housing), rear suspension links (easier when engine out), rear brakes, 997 turbo tranny mount, GT3 engine mounts, protomotive intake system, etc... As you can see, it adds up pretty fast....
On the coolant hoses, I would skip welding, as there are only a few places that can do it correctly. Ask me how I know... Pinning works just as good!
Good luck!

I would do all of them, including the water pump housing. See my post above regarding welding.
