Thoughts on this car - first porsche
Any help would be greatly appreciated! I've been attempting to gain as much knowledge on buying a 996 TT as possible. However, I'm still hesitant about pulling the trigger. This will be my first porsche. I intend to use it as a weekend thrill ride - however, I like to put a lot of miles on my car. It won't sit in the garage.
22.6K Miles
The dealership has some not so good reviews.

It's been for sale for over two months. What wrong with it?

Beautiful car! Price seems a bit steep. As almost anyone on this site will tell you, be sure to have it checked out by an independent mechanic that specializes in Porsche. Don't believe a word of what the dealer says. Dealers, brokers, attorneys... all cut from the same mold... will lie to their grandmother to make a buck.
As the above poster says, its a Tiptronic, which many don't care for. But, many do, so the choice is yours. I do think that for a weekend-only car I would gravitate towards a manual tranny.
The mileage is very low for a 2003. Some people worry that seals may have dried up, etc. for a car that isn't regularly driven. Personally, I'm not 100% convinced that this concern applies to newer vehicles. But, there is no doubt that letting a vehicle just sit for years is not the greatest thing. Hard to say with this car... who knows? it may have been taken out for frequent but short drives during its life span.
996 TT is a great car, and great for your weekend thrills.
I couldn't care less about the dealer reviews if I'm not going to be taking it there for servicing.
My $0.02: If you really like the car, get it checked out by a mechanic, talk the dealer down a few grand, and have a blast with it!
(Oh, get an oil change and coolant flush ASAP if you don't know when it was last done. Better yet, negotiate that into the price.).

It has been for sale for over 4 months and for not much more than is being asked for it now.
Hard to believe in that time no one has bought the car simply because it is a Tip. I mean someone loved it enough to buy it new for God only knows how much money so there should be used car buyers around that can overlook the Tip (not that I think a Tip is that big of a negative for these cars).
That no one has bought the car raises flags.
Another way of looking at it do you really believe in this amount of time no other buyer has looked at that car and gone my that's a heck of a car for the money and bought it?
Generally the SOP is to buy first and ask questions later. IOWs, act in haste, repent in leisure.
Anyhow, like I mentioned above that no one in 4 months has bought this car raises flags.
Be on your toes.

Thanks for all of the quick responses.
The 996TT fits my budget. I'm not set on the car in the link. I've searched autotrader and the listings here. Do you guys have any recommendations on finding a decent used car relative to my local area (MD)?
$55k is the limit I set for myself. I'm aware of the maintenance cost, however, I prefer not to roll the dice and buy something that I'll spend more time fixing than driving.
At the same dealership, they have a 2005 cab listed at $75K. Is it worth holding off for another 6 months to buy a more recent model?

Macster as usual has good points but I've seen nice cars sit for months for no reason other then the right person hasn't come along usually because of the price. I'm not a fan of autos but they have their place and can be vey quick. Low miles good colors if its stock and has a good ppi I believe the price is fair.

I live in Pa and for me it was hard to find a low mileage clean car that was within a reasonable distance but waited and one finally came up. In our area you have to watch out for rusty undercarriage fasteners etc. Take your time and get what you want/like.

How about this one? Near me and as many can attest too I am a stickler for details. Can look at it for you. Under budget. Good miles and good color combo: http://www.planethonda.com/Preowned-...13S686313.aspx

The original link - those rims, just don't look very good on that car. Not sure what they are. I would skip on that one if it were me.
Holding out for an 05 isn't going to get you much. For about $75-85K you can get the newer generation 997 Turbo which is 2008+. The 05s are nice though for the 996 because they all have the X50 package which boosts HP to close to 450. X50 was an option code as well so look for that in your hunt. Not sure if it was an available option with a Tip though. I find the best deals are through individual sellers on these cars over a dealer.

The blue tt Kevin mentioned shows 4 thousand some miles in photos but they list 9 thousand some miles in description the same thing in first black tt hmm. My car had around that spent on it when I bought it with 12500mi for brakes rotors rad/brake flush etc because the rotors 2001 would show hair line cracks and of course age with fluids.
