The Next Porsche 911 GT3 RS Won't Get a Manual
Road & Track 4 hours ago

A new Porsche 911 GT3 is here and the big news is that–hell yes–it gets an optional six-speed manual transmission. This nod to purists reflects a new mode of thinking at Porsche's GT department, following the success of the 911 R and Cayman GT4. That doesn't mean all of Porsche's GT cars will get manuals, though. The next GT3 RS will be PDK only. In an interview with Road & Track, Andreas Preuninger, head of GT cars at Porsche, explained why the automaker will offer a manual on the GT3, but not on the GT3 RS. Essentially, it boils down to different customers for the GT3, than the GT3 RS. "The [customers] buying an RS are the motorsport guys," said Preuninger. "They're using the car as a track .....

I sort of get where he is coming from because PDK is obviously faster, but give me a manual every day, whether I'm at the track or not. I don't disagree with them offering PDK only in the RS...a car of that performance envelope wouldn't be suitable with a manual gearbox. It's just an odd explanation from AP IMO.

I see plenty of GT3s at the track, but rarely a GT3RS. When they are there, they are doing parade laps. Just part of the GT3RS Kool Aid IMHO, the "real race car for real racers"

I am with Chuck on this one. I almost never see an RS on the track especially a 991 version. My guess is most are garage queens/show cars.

Agreed. Saw a few 7.1GT3RSs, more 7.2GT3RSs, few 991GT3s. See no 991GT3RSs...

Andreas Preuninger is still trying to live down the "Grandmas can use paddles. They aren't challenging." comment. http://www.topgear.com/car-reviews/p...dr/road-test-0 .

Which he fully meant - He IS German management and an engineer (think Hammond's "German engineers do not do u-turns" comment ..
@2:48 mark ~ ) - before the bean-counters and upper management said to say otherwise...

2 years worth of Porsche track days with my local
club and only been on track with an RS once. And it's not because there aren't enough of them around.

A few more on track here in the US. But, really a sad trend.
All the RS will probably be back on track when the values starts to drop.

There is a gentleman on the 991 GT3RS forum that tracks his RS. I have seen him at the Glen and he is fast. Car is fully wrapped in Matte Orange.

Last week's DRT event drew some GT3RS. Most of the RS' around here look like they just rolled out of the showroom. They are beautiful beasts, even if hopelessly disfigured by having just 2 pedals.

I need to go do track day at Homestead soon, (I did buy a new helmet, so that's a good excuse) where I hope to see some of these guys getting loud.

Top Gear's Hamster, "this isn't just good, it's the best 911 ever..."

I love watching that segment, over and over and over

Definitely prefer the narrow body of the 6.
New cars are too big and bulky for my taste, and hint me of beetle.
Still sexy nevertheless.

You would need to come to a Rennsport DE up here at Le Circuit Mont Tremblant...
It's a GT3RS festival.
