This thread brings back some good memories... Here's my 3.2l being put together. Amazing that the internals are the same... No wonder the GT3s are bullet proof! Up to this point, not much different that doing an air-cooled 911 engine... The hardest thing of the whole build process is doing the cam timing... Looking forward to see how it is done on this engine.

I have a couple of questions if that's ok & I apologize if this one has been answered already, why the change of rods if you are just doing a big bore kit?

Why did you go with a big bore kit over say a stoker crank & rod change with standard pistons or a combination crank & pistons kit?

Also where can I purchase this 4.0L big bore kit from, I read earlier in the thread that you mentioned Wrightwood racing but can't seem to find their details.

Cheers
You can purchase the kit through IPB Autosport. The phone number is +1 916-453-1465.

Cam timing on the water cooled engines is easy. The hard part is getting the middle pistons on, on each bank!

Hopefully I'll be able to squeeze it in this year in between vacation and ski season

Hitting it hard next year though. Don't worry Brad, you will STILL be faster.

Sounds solid, unless Porsche decided to price the 4.0 parts like they're made out of unobtanium! Will have to compare in PET.

Great, hope to see you out there, email me if your are going some time

I don't know about me being fast though, a year off with the baby means a lot of the speed secrets are rusty

Hey I've been there, fun old down. For sure go to the islands via Ferry from Split, or check out Dubrovnik further south

Croatia was definitely a fun trip...made it all along the coast from Split up to Pula.

Back to building the engine... We started installing the pistons last night. You can't use the factory wrist pin clip tool as the new wrist pin diameter is 1mm smaller. This made it more difficult. We attached the center piston to the rod first. The outer pistons are placed into the sleeves before installing the sleeves into the cylinder housings. The center sleeve has to be pressed into the cylinder housings while simultaneously compressing the rings...and everything is so tight.

Pictures are forthcoming. Currently waiting in line to pick up my "4 liter" plates at the DMV.

The housing is slid on with the outer two liners already in.

Of course the cylinders are stuffed to prevent the wrist pin clip from falling into the engine as you struggle to attach it.

At least you can use the factory tool to slide the inner sleeve in. Let me reiterate how difficult it was to get these rings in. Extra hands were necessary.

One bank done, on to the next one.

Center sleeve to go…

In frustration, time to do something easy. Chain housings and guides.

Last one to go…

All pistons are in as of 8pm tonight. Thank god.

In the meantime…I had my stock 996 intakes port matched to the 997 cup heads.

996 intake plenum. Note that this will NOT be replaced with the snake oil IPD intake.

And the 997 throttle body just came in today too!

997 throttle body measures in at 84mm.

996 plenum is only 78mm. Back to the machine shop…
