Default Replacement Batttery

Having reviewed several of the old threads regarding the 996 GT3 battery, my understanding is that the OEM battery is a lightweight model with a "Moll" brand name and which has a rating of 570 Cold Cranking Amps. That seems low but related to Porsche's effort to save weight. I would rather have a more powerful battery and can live with a few extra pounds. Do you guys know whether a standard 996 battery has more CCA and more important whether it fits in the GT3's battery tray without modification? Thx.

I have a 2003 996 and yesterday I replaced the battery. It was the Moll 570 which weighed 44.6 lbs. I replaced with a Duralast from Autozone that was rated 700 cold cranking amps and 875 amps when warmed up. It was the 48R part no. Weighed 34 lbs. It's the same width but it is shorter but fit the bracket perfectly when the battery is slid all the way to the drivers side. There are 3 adjustment holes for the bracket. If you want even more cranking power, Autozone carries a gold brand that has more cranking amps and carries a 3 year replacement and 8 year warranty as opposed to 2 year replacement and 7 year warranty.

Standard BCI battery sizes 47, 48, and 49 (as well as the original Porsche sizes 90, 91, and 92) all fit. I bought a size 47 at Costco for under $50 (this is the smallest of the group). Since there are 3 tie-down holes in the battery tray, you can choose to get one of the larger size batteries (49 is the largest)

I have an '04 and have ordered an Interstate MTP H8. It's a 49 size battery and goes for about $200. It is supposed to be much better than the Moll and just a little heavier. I decided against an expensive lightweight battery and decided to lose 25 lbs. from my gut instead! CCA = 720.

I got a Die Hard E2 Group 47 for $120 at Sears with a 3 years warranty. It's 20 lbs lighter than the big battery and it uses the OEM bracket and tray.

I seriously doubt that the International is 20 lbs. lighter than the stock Moll battery. I have a Sears International in my '02 996 and it weighs about the same as the OEM battery. BTW, forget the Moll. A lot of Porsche dealers don't even like to carry them anymore for reliability reasons.

I am going to try an Odyssey with a mounting kit. It weighs only 24 lbs. I'll let you know when I receive it.

It's 20 lbs lighter compared to my stock one (I have a turbo) My big battery used the first hole in the tray and now it uses the last hole in the tray (see in pic) My Die hard is almost what you have in you GT3 stock.

Oh, so it's 20 lbs lighter than your Turbo battery... now I understand. BTW, I don't think the OEM Moll in the GT3 is very light.

I'd be interested to know how much life you are getting out of your batteries. This is what i use in my 996 GT3.

Update on this matter........Had not yet purchased the new battery and the car would not start after I drove 100 miles today. Was stuck at a gas station after fill-up and had to get a jump from the Auto Club. After all that I finally bought and installed a Group 48 Sears Diehard battery, a perfect fit. However, symptoms initially observed are still present, i.e. a slowly dropping battery voltage gauge made worse with lights and a/c on. Voltage drops below 12. Looks like alternator/voltage regulator problem. I am a little surprised by this because the car has only 13,400 miles. Will remove alternator and have it checked.

As I posted in the other thread, mine supposedly checked out ok when they tested it. Had them rebuild it anyhow and the problem was solved.

Normally Sears will check your charging system to determine the cause of the battery failure. I have seen premature alternator failures from water damage.
