Are you talking about essentially cutting holes in front of the rear tire to create intake holes like this GT2, but on a Carrera?
It has been done. In fact there was a guy here not long ago that had posted pictures of his car because he was trying to sell it after finding that the modifications were done hastily. He deleted the pictures because the car received some negative feedback, unfortunately. Try to reach out to user @ace17 https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...ng-advice.html. See if he can send you some old pictures of his car.

Well, I imagine it could be done well. http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p...section=801-55
The individual I mentioned didn't post detailed pictures of the work done on his car, so I'm not sure which work specifically he was unhappy with. If you were able to work with "the right" body shop I'm sure they could get it to blend well enough.

I would like to do this too but my body work skills suck. Until i can bank enough money for body shop mine will stay factory.
Please do the mod and document so i can use it as a template .

I'm doing the same thing to my car as I did an engine swap so I'd love to see what you come up with. I'm leaning towards the "ruff" side scoops look I posted in my build thread. do it!!!

I’ll definitely document. Trying to decide on the right scoop. Love the Ruff look towards the back as well, but figured the typical side scoop would be the easiest. I’m not trying to imitate a turbo, but I’m also not trying to reinvent the wheel. Thanks!

Just google Singer DLS and get familiar with it's rear quarter window air inlets. Very neat solution.

I've thought about this too, have you considered finding a gemballa gtr and getting molds or something? I personally like the look and it's not a turbo copy

There is a company that makes side scoops for the 996 NB. There have been some used ones listed in the parts for sale section before the combined new marketplace, but that copies the Turbo cars.
Question is...what are you after? Rear brake cooling? Intercooler? Oil or trans cooler? Engine air induction? Or just looking cool? All can be done and there any many ways to do each efficiently.
Also, GT3s didn’t have side air intakes, however GT2’s and Turbo’s did...for airflow to their intercoolers.
