Looking at a 04 996 S4 with a 3.6. My 04 Carrera C2 has a 3.6 so what's up with the S?

sometimes people transpose the 4S label to S4. Check the rear tail light (solid bar) to confirm.

IIRC - the "S" 996's had the same motor - 3.6. The S was a wide body option package with the suspension from the turbo, but hte same engine as the standard Carrera.

S in the 996 signified cosmetic enhancements (wide body and turbo look bumpers and rocker panels), some options became standard (full leather interior, headlights, heated seats IIRC) and a few performance enhancements (red brakes + lower suspension - although I've seen conflicting reports about whether the suspension was different in the US cars). I believe since then the S has come to signify a horsepower performance boost as well - but it did not with the 996.

That article mentions a sports exhaust - I've seen that a few other places as well and don't believe it's true. Can anyone confirm?

PSE or Porsche sports exhaust was an option and didn't necessarily come standard on the 4S.

I have a 03 C4S. the manual specs show it to be 345hp. 25 hp bump over std carrera
my indy confirmed also.

It sounds like you have the x51 power kit, but that is not included on every 4S. Without it the 4s engine is the same as any other m96. From what I understand you could get that same option on a non-4S as well.

agreed x51 power kit - the 40th AE has 345hp

You would have to have an X51 power kit to have 345.... almost all other C4s make 315 HP
