Quest to 996

Yeah, if you can, get a Mk I aerokit car. I think those are somewhat special cars that will be sought after in the future. I wish I had held on to mine, especially given the paltry sum that I sold it for. It is still my all-time favorite car (at least until the 996tt comes out of the shop tomorrow with new wastegate actuators and boost hoses). I almost sold our 951 last month unsolicited to another PCA member, but my son talked me out of it. I'm already glad he did.

There are a good selection of 99s on the Los Angeles craigslist. Not all are good examples but it also depends on how you want to spend your budget. I'm assuming you want a manual trans. Find a good car at $15k to $16k and be able to drop $5k into it and deal with a lot of deferred maintanence plus have money in the bank for any future issues. And there are some cars in the area at the 19 to 22k price as well. Will you be doing your own work on the car? If not, maybe search for the shop you want to work with before you find a car. Then you'll be ready to have a PPI done the moment you find a car you can be serious about.
If you are comfortable staying with the original IMS then I would only focus on the 99 model year. If you are thinking of changing the IMSB then I would go all the way and get the Permanent (Lifetime) Solution. I believe Tony Callas at RennSport in Hawthore is the only certified shop is this area to do this work.
Good luck...and stay on your budget.

I must say, with some amount of bias, that I love my 99 and already semi-regret putting it on the market (but I want an open-roof.)

Water cooled to water cooled. I dig it! Nice of the lady..... and investment ! I'm lucky to have the go ahead from my bride, even with a 1 year old boy in the mix!

Loving the 99 MK1 opinions from everyone. I think I'm down for the stock double row IMS. And I don't see the extra $5000 - $10,000 being worth the Mk2 in my eyes. Give me the amber turn signals!!!!!!!!!!!
I looked at a 99 with 30,000 miles yesterday. Was listed at $25,000 at a fancy used car dealer, and sold after 3 months. I'm assuming sold for less. It was perfect condition wise. Figured that's the top of the 99 C2 coupes.
I'm mechanically inclined, not a super whiz, have access to a lift. Figured I can do quite a bit on my own. Maybe tackle something like the oil separator if needed. Got Aase motors (more air cooled but they rock) for something serious and will have to meet some other shops. Maybe BBI in Huntington Beach?
. . .really loving the 40th anniversary car. Haven't heard any justification for that one versus a 99. Just love from you guys on the first year. Going with the 99 leaves me room for maintenance and tires. Seems like a smarter choice.
Thanks for all the comments. RDs, Daytona, MK2, . . .everything! Loving the encouragement!

I personally love the C4S as well - the widebody, no spoiler look is just awesome. But it's just a value question - clean Mk1 cars seem easier to find for relatively inexpensive compared to Mk2 and give you very nearly the same driving experience, plus the whole dual row vs single row stuff.
