Default Shifter Upgrade

Oh my gosh!!!
Just finished installing the Function First - Shift Right bearings.
What a difference.
I had ~ 1 inch play at the top of the shifter, granted I have over a couple of hundred thousand miles on the clock, but he original plastic cup and ball actually looked in great shape.
But after installing the F1 SR bearings virtually no slop...
It's like the FD Motorsports Golden Rod/RS shifter upgrade on the 993... just a world of difference.

Can't recommend it enough especially for the price.

Sorry for the picture size.

Nice workbench, you slob! (Looks exactly like mine. )

Thanks for the review. I was curious whether it would make much of a difference. I drool over but am far too cheap to go the Numeric route...this might be a good compromise for serial tightwads like me.

For the serial smart guys, Ben006 has a ball bearing short shifter that is significantly cheaper.NAYYY

Cheaper is not necessarily good and hardly ever better. That said, I didn't like the idea of double nutting as a solution to fix the bearing cups. I also don't believe ball bearings are the best solution for this appplication.
The thread highlighted above has several posts indicating some binding (thus certainly could be user error) but is a symptom of the design tolletences (double nut).
There seems to also be minimal understanding of the assembly, hence zip ties on the cable spring retainers.
In the end though I like the F1 design (I have other of their products), and believe it is the best solution for my needs and it does not require a group buy.

As I recently picked up a 997.2 gt3 shifter to replace my factory 996 SSK, has anybody added the F1 bearings to a 997 shifter? Curious to see if there is any improvement.

Don't waste your money on a 997 SSK, $425 and not happy.

The throws are shorter, but just as sloppy

What about the Phenix Engineering bushings?

Has anyone tried those?

Nobody said so. Just an alternative that many have used and enjoyed. It just happens to be (way) cheaper

Ball bearings are very easy to service and just about indestructible compared to plastic bushings/cups.Double nuts work well and are easy to adjust
The latest version has polished parts that addresses the rare binding issue. That is very clear in the linked thread.

There seems to also be minimal understanding of the assembly, hence zip ties on the cable spring retainers.
The very young guy who kindly makes these parts for us is already a certified Porsche Tech and still learning the Trade. If you look at the other product he developed ,he seems much better qualified than most of us.
In the end though I like the F1 design (I have other of their products), and believe it is the best solution for my needs and it does not require a group buy.
Many Porsche owners have found Ben's 2 little products worth waiting for. I liked the idea of encouraging a young guy learning the trade. AS I made clear, I have bought nothing from him so have no bias.
If you have suggestions for improving this product that many other Members may benefit from ,that would be great to read.

Got it.

I always thought the 997 shifter was a good upgrade.

Can anyone suggest a shorter, yet crisper shifter feel?

Numeric cannot be beat for shorter and crisper feel. There are 3 levels it can be adjusted to. I have it on the shortest and feels like a bolt action rifle. It's not inexpensive, but is certainly worth every penny.
