Default To exhaust or not

Not that I have the money at the moment, job hunting after quitting a decent paying but brutal on the conscience sales job, but I have been tossing around the idea of changing out my stock exhaust, at some point. My Boxster S had an awesome sounding Fabspeed system on it, and the burbles and pops when you let off the throttle were glorious. The howling at high revs was downright arrousing. But alas my 996 has a stock system, and I miss the burbles and pops and other sexy noises. Though the big, big, thing I like about the mostly quiet stock setup, when setting off from a stop with the windows down I hear nothing but a beautiful flat six mechanical symphony, it is raw and simple, and I do love it. Though most of the rest of the time, unless I'm at WOT and about four grand, it's just really quite quiet. I guess my question is, have you done an aftermarket exhaust and how do you feel about it, do you miss the stock setup, or do you have it stock and wish it weren't?

My other car has a loud aftermarket exhaust, which makes me really appreciate how quiet the 996 is for driving around every day but still sounding good when you step on it. I'm really curious to hear a Fister exhaust mod though, since it's relatively affordable, supposedly reasonable in volume, and everyone here that I've heard that has one has absolutely raved about it.

I've heard a lot of good things about it as well, though I'd like to hear it in person and preferably from the inside of the car as well. I don't want to sound like some kid in a civic that put a fart can on the car, but like I said before the Fabspeed setup added a nice presence to the car, especially when going through tunnels or next to some walls

ddont waste alot on expensive exhaust, all they are is tubes that air goes through. look at maxspeed, agency power, check others on ebay.
you should get headers, mufflers, cats complete SS for 2500-3500 and great sound and performance

Agree with above...on the 996 our full package with headers, X-Pipe w/ cats and sport mufflers sounds absolutely fantastic. It all just went on year end sale today, too!

Now's the time bro.

You quit a job that was bumming you out, and it's time to let the lion roar. The hard part was quitting that job. The exhaust thing is a no brainer.

I'm in the 997 house, but 2nd 3rd and 4th any support for the Fister/Gundo option. For a couple hundred bucks at most, it's done, the car rumbles, burbles and pops as you like.

If you don't like it? (not going to happen)

You just swap your mufflers with someone else on here who has the OG cans on their car. It's easy.

But you won't want to swap. Nobody ever wants to go back.

And since you're between gigs, you gotta treat yourself to keep motivated.

The gundo carrot. The Fister reward.

Remind yourself the answer to the age-old question and follow through.

Q: Exhaust or Not?

A: ALWAYS EXHAUST!

there's a ton of videos out there - but just listen:

It's a no brainer man. You got this.

Post a clip when you get it done. You can thank the entire rennlist community later.

and good luck finding the new gig. I'm on the hunt myself, so I hear you on the dolla-bills front.

In my cabriolet the Gundo hack is just about perfect. For a coupe the Fister will probably be a better fit as it's just a bit louder. Both sound great are are really inexpensive to do. Replacement systems can be great for performance and weight savings but are a different price bracket altogether.

I have a Fister on my cab and it sounds amazing! I will never go back to stock. YouTube videos cannot do justice. I purchased mine after reading a ton of awesome reviews and attempting to listen to sound clips on the web. You cannot go wrong for the money.

I run Afterhours Exhaust.... For weight savings primarily and yes it is loud... can get obnoxious in 3rd gear between 48 and 53 MPH... but I wouldn't change it back to stock ever. I love the noise. And will eventually add an X pipe to help the system become a little higher pitched. Right now it is very deep/throaty but would like a little more Exotic sound.

You can also run an X pipe on stock mufflers and may be able to achieve the sound you want.

Last Summer I had my local muffler guy mod my OE cans with the PSE hack. Noticeably louder but still not nearly enough grunt for me. After six months the PSE muffs seem almost like the stock ones again. Bummer. This Summer I'll take them off, store them, and go through the exercise again with another pair of OE cans I bought on eBay - but this time with the Gundo hack which will be louder.

If the Gundo's disappoint I'll take my PSEs and + Gundo and try that. That's the plan anyway. Moral of the story (in my view) is that nothing fits better back there than the factory pieces. Some of the aftermarket stuff is real crap from a fitment perspective.

Be careful not to trade for rattles in your quest for sound.

I know EVERYONE goes on and on about the Fister, so one more probably isn't useful - but as an extra data point: My wife loves the sound; my neighbors are begrudgingly complimentary (meaning yes, it's a little loud, but it sounds awesome); the crazy German lady who lives at the end of my street tries to get me to wind it up every time I pass her house, total strangers have told me that my car "sounds the way a Porsh oughta," and my dog - according to my wife and the dog sitter - knows I'm nearly home when I'm about half a mile away.

The Fister is the ONLY mod I've ever done to my 996 that I have never second-guessed or wound up uninstalling.

Note that the only thing currently considered a "Fister" mod is the coupling of the inlet and outlet pipes with a crossover pipe to allow some exhaust to bypass the muffler entirely. The "old Gundo" / PSE hack, which involves adding a new opening to the muffler and connecting that to the outlet pipe, is almost always disappointing (based on watching these threads for the past 4 years)...

Warning: You will turn into one of those hooligans who needs to blip the throttle in every tunnel, overpass, and parking garage. Forever.

FastM96,
Nothing wrong with your plan above. Or you can just skip it all and go with a proven winner for not much $$$....FISTERs!
