Default Did I get sent the incorrect tensioner for cyl 4-6?

So I am trying to get rid of that apparently common chain rattle which happens for less than a second on cold start up. I've already done the IMS tensioner, didn't make a difference so now I'm going to do 1-3 and 4-6.

I ordered the parts and I'm a little puzzled with 4-6 as it doesn't look like I expected it to.

From what I can tell from my manuals and internet info, the tensioners "more or less" look the same but are differentiated by a different number of circles in the head of the unit with a 32mm hex head.

Indeed, my IMS and 1-3 tensioners look like that, but 4-6 looks different.

Anyone know if there has been a part# supersede or something?

I received # 996 105 188 02

It has a round head and a much smaller internal hex, as opposed to the full 32mm OD hex. See photo here.

I was expecting it to look more like these:

Also, I just changed the oil. How much am I going to lose pulling #1-3?

So you don't think it should have the hex head type of the others and the circle markings? Was there some sort of an updated design or something?

No, it's always like that, different than the other two. It's head is flat and low profile to make room for the power steering lines that are mounted close to it.

I've got the same issue(rattle) and I just changed the ims tensioner, interested to know if changing the other two will do the trick, please let us know how it goes, when you putting them in??

Thanks. Heard back from that parts supplier just a short while ago. According to Porsche it is an updated design and they'll be changing 1-3 to that design as well.

Sucks though, now I need to buy a 14mm key socket! Oh well.

Hopefully this weekend if I get the opportunity. I want to do the AOS as well so I'll need a good chunk of the day to do everything.

Yes, it's been updated but the external head shape remained the same. It always had the internal hex even in the original version.

Are you going to drop the engine down a little to get some room to work, that AOS will be tricky to get at??

Early engines had an external hex of 32mm, not the internal hex of 14mm. The newest revisions of these are all 14mm internal hex, even if they are for an earlier engine.

Hopefully not. If it's necessary I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. If it's super tight, I might just do 1-3 first and see if that cures the noise.

Thanks for the info Jake.

If it fixes the skeleton masturbating in a filing cabinet filled with spoons noise on cold starts, it'll be worth it.

Did 1-3 last night. I won't know for sure if it was successful or not until tomorrow or maybe later tonight - want to give it at least 24 hours for the cold start.

BUT, I am cautiously optimistic. The new tensioner for 1-3 is about 1/4" longer than the old one and once I primed it, it was solid as a rock and actually made installing it quite difficult. It was a royal PITA as I was loosing oil continually as I was trying to put it in and lost around 5 litres... of 3 week old oil

Quick Reply: Did I get sent the incorrect tensioner for cyl 4-6?
