Default How much metal is too much?

I changed my oil today after about 10 months and 4000 miles. I'm flushing her with Driven BR30 for 500 miles and then will switch over to Driven DT40.

When I took a look at the old oil filter, there were some plastic bits and also a few ferrous pieces here and there. Most looked like a short, thin wire.

So the question is: how much ferrous metal is too much in for an oil change?

I wouldn't worry about what you're seeing there.

Do you also have a magnetic drain plug? If so, anything there? If not, I'd recommend one with the next oil change. I would not be too concerned with the filter contents. Keep the pictures above for comparison at the next oil change.

I'm also a big fan of oil analysis. I use Blackstone labs: http://www.blackstone-labs.com/

What you see is normal. I don't understand why you went to the BR oil, that is break in oil, has very high levels of zinc for breaking in new metals.

FYI, my filter looks the same, and I just changed the oil on my 2007 Audi S8 a few weeks back, cut the filter open on that car (has 70K miles) and found exactly the same. Never cut any of my Audi filters open before.....

those little brown plastic peices look like timing chain pad material. maybe pull the sump plate off to make sure the oil pick up isn't full of it.

Jake Raby recommends it in order to flush out the old oil. There's a recent thread about it here where a guy had some crazy numbers showing up in his oil analysis. Turns out he went straight from one brand of oil to DT40 and they didn't mix well.
