Locked out
Locked out of my 2002 996. Key fob has not worked in a while, light comes on but does not function, dealer says need new keys. Have been locking and unlocking with key for about 2 years. After arriving at work today, the key seems to be lacking any resistance when it is turned. Tried holding up the handle and turning key without response. Battery appears to be charged and is less than a year old.
The roof was slightly open, but did not have anything to stick through. Will go back in the morning. Can i use a stick to unlock form the central locking button? Or should I use a hooked coat hanger or similar and just pull the latch?
thanks for your help.

Have you tried holding the key in the "unlock" position for a few seconds? Even if the lock has become disengaged from the key cylinder, maybe the electrical connection is still working and you can roll the window down using the key in the key hole...
Having suffered through the anguish of broken safety glass bouncing around in a car door for years despite disassembling the door panel several times to try to remove it all, I'd use the "blow out the window" as a very last resort...

Been there, done that. If the piece highlighted in red is dislodged, the key is useless. You'll need to open the car from the inside, somehow.

Got in through the slightly opened sun roof and pulled the drivers side handle with a coat hanger. The mechanical locking mechanism is not working. Looks like I will need to replace the part dare devil pointed out in diagram above.
Will now look for posts on how to repair/replace key locking mechanism, does not look easy.
thanks for all of your help.

A few possibilities:
- key fob was not programmed properly (need dealer reprogram)
- it needs reset (there are many threads on this. Something like install the battery with reverse polarity)
- cold solder joints on circuit board (need new circuit board or diy repair using tin foil amd heat gun. There are threads here on rennlist)

This is very common. I have a thread on it somewhere. The fob gets senile and loses its memory. Often, when the battery dies and is replaced. Unfortunately, the only thing you can do is have it reprogrammed by the dealer at an outrageous fee.
