WHAT RPM'S
I took mine out this morning. No traffic and open hiway here outside of Las Vegas. My car has a TIP. In high gear which is 5th because TIPs only have 5 gears it turns 3800 rpm at 100mph and 5200 rpm at 130mph. When I get on the onramp where I can see if there is traffic and there isn't any I shift at 5000 rpms. The car loves these rpms but maybe I'm shifting to early. What do you guys with manuals shift at? Even at 90 to 100 mph cruising the car gets almost 22 mile per gallon according to the on board computer. I don't use mine as a daily driver as I live only 3 miles from where I go before using a company vehicle. The oil would never even warm up. When I do get to drive it I like to put on at least 50 miles and some is in the city and some is on great roads.

Have to agree...let your ears and the seat of your pants and the smile on your face tell you when to shift. On a track I'd be pushing the red line but on the street there is rarely need or opportunity. I also like to feed on the throttle and ride the cams up and up. Living only three miles from work must be a strange heaven/hell situation.

Tip will up-shift for you at redline anyway even if you are in manual mode; that's the built in safety.
Next time you are driving, put the tip in manual mode and mash the pedal from the dead stop. If will shift on its own at redline in every gear.

I also live very close to work. My company vehicle gets parked 2 miles from the house. My 911 is strictly a weekend warrior also. Most rides put 100-200 miles on it. I have no problem with this set-up, lol.
Oh, I'm a manual and shift different everytime based on conditions and threats... mustang, corvette, etc. Lol.

I shift at all different RPMs (Tiptronic).
I rarely shift over 4500 unless I am intentionally wanting to shift near redline.
I will ride around at 2500-2800 or so for long stretches.
Sometimes, if the car is well warmed up and I'm in city traffic I will let the computer shift as programmed which results in lower RPMs.
Occasionally I will stick the lever in auto mode, nail the throttle and let the logic shift the trans when it will.

In my manual C2:
Normal (=boring) driving, RPMs are generally in the 3000-4500 range. 3000 RPM in 6th gear = 79 mph.
Spirited street driving (=fun), upper shift point is more is the 5500-6000 range. The engine takes on a whole new voice >5000 RPM.
Full Stig Attack Mode (=uber fun, saved for the twisty roads), RPM's are 4000-6500, usually on the higher end of the range. You have a lot more control over moving load fore/aft with the throttle at higher RPMs.

In my 6-Speed:
If the temp gauge is to the left of the 1/4 line, I try to stay below 2500. Temp gauge to the left of halfway mark, less than 4000. Once properly warmed up - barely to the right of the halfway mark - I'm usually dancing around between 2500 and 6000. My less common but most favorite place is between 4500 and 6000. Usually if I go over 6000 my internal "Oh ****" switch turns on.
