Default 996 and 986 6 speed transmission output shaft differences.

I've spent the last 6 months searching for a missing output shaft for one of my 996/986 6 speed Transmissions and have found that a lot of vendors do not know firstly that there are two different versions and then which is for which transmission.

Now that I finally have both, I figured I'd stick the info up on the web (as I couldn't find it when I needed it) so that others can benefit.

The 996 and 986 6 speed transmissions share many pieces as they're fundamentally the same but with the differential flipped over to reverse the direction of drive.

The differential was upgraded in 2002 and the output flanges were changed to suit.

The early setup has 'clip in' flanges which are only held in place with a spring clip part way along the splined section of the shaft.

This shaft has the part number: 996.332.209.00

The later shaft is held in place with an M10 bolt which goes through the centre of the shaft.

This shaft has the part number: 996.332.209.50 (note only one digit different!)

Here are some more photos showing the two next to each other.

Note that the later shaft is a lot shorter.

And the parts catalogue page that features them both.

Hopefully by being posted here, this post will not only pop up in google images but it should bring people to the best Porsche Forum around.
