Dead battery, car charger freaks my 996
I went to start my '99 996 C2 and the battery was COMPLETELY dead. When I hooked up a car charger, the thing lit up like a carnival. Marker lights blinking and clicking, dash lights blinking, bells ringing....all that and no action when I tried to turn it over. The red was on the positive and black on the negative terminal and it freaked regardless of the volt setting on the charger. What did I do wrong??

If your charger is consumer grade only (1~10amps) it won't have enough power to start the car. Try to disconnect the battery from the car before charging it. Wait till it's fully charged before trying again. Or use another car to jump start it.

Buy a CTEK tender, it will "rebuild" your battery.

if it freaked when you tried to start it - that is what mine does when the battery isn't completely dead but not enough amps to start it. If I use the charger - I have to leave it on for a few hours. The $79 portable jump starter/FM radio I got off Amazon works great to start it though

You should never try to start the car with the charger attached. You should disconnect the neg lead from the battery before you charge the battery. Battery chargers DO NOT put out a clean DC current, it is actually AC current with the neg or bottom part of the sine wave chopped off with diodes. This isnt good for the electronics of the car.

battery/charger issues
OK, guys, don't jump all over me but...
>a dead battery is generally not recoverable via re-charging. Buy a new one.
>best not to "quick charge" a low battery; use a trickle charger to avoid any risks to sensitive (say, expensive) German electronics.
>any name brand trickle charger will suffice, but a genuine Porsche trickle charger will charge through the cigarette lighter receptacle on post-MY1996 p-cars...very convenient and zero risk.
