The 996 Essential Companion - Do you?
I just bought the 996 Essential Companion. It's a BIG BOOK, and has lots of detail in it about lots of things 996. Just wondering how many of you bought the book, and how do you use it? I don't think that this is something that you just sit down and read, even though there is a lot of interesting text in it.
Just curious. After spending $60, I'd like to know that I'm going to be getting my use out of it.

Well, yeah you can sit down and read it if you are interested in the 996. Thereafter you use it as a reference to all the questions you may have and some you've not thought of.

I bought the book. It's probably the best source of information for the 996. Most any question you have regarding it will be answered here. It's full of interesting information, technical notes, specifications, and useful tips for the DIYer.
There are 5 or 6 pics of my Cab in the book. I think it helped the prospective buyer comit when I showed him the pics of my car in the book right after he drove it, lol. Now his car is in the book.

I also have the book, a must have for any 996 owner. one day or another it will pay for itself I believe. Anyways it is just a great read, tons of pictures and history. I was positively impressed by the book when I received it, I could not believe how much info was in there, and still there is a good amount of fun thing to just glance at. Only drawback, almost too big for a coffee table book.
this is a must have. It will be part of the kit when I sell my car

I think it's a good reference, especially for new owners to get to know their cars.
I bought mine in the UK from here.

I ordered mine less than a week ago, from a used book seller on Amazon's site, paid $60 for it, and received it yesterday. The book was described as being in excellent - "like new" condition. The description was pretty well on the mark. The book is very much like new, and I have it in my hands.
I just looked on their site. The used books that are available are now expensive - starting at $85. But there are a number of other sellers on Amazon's site selling the book NEW, in stock, with immediate delivery, with prices going from $59 on up. When you look up the title, look right below the description. You will see "Buy New" and then below that, see "18 new and 9 used from $$Price." Click on that, and you will see the sellers that are available.
Good Luck

It is an outstanding resource, and an interesting read.
But... Sweathers' take on IMS issues is from out of la-la land. He essentially blames the entire problem on owners not changing their oil enough. Complete defense of Porsche. And it is sort of vitriolic, out of pace with the rest of the book.

I did happen to read the section in the book on the IMS RMS issues. Yes, you're right, he blames the Internet for providing a forum for unfettered and unjustified bashing of Porsche, and places the blame squarely on the owner for using the wrong type of oil. (not wanting to turn this thread into a discussion of IMS RMS issues - since they are discussed ad nauseam elsewhere in this forum) I certainly feel that the "truth" if there is one, is somewhere in between. He certainly says that Porsche is unwilling to discuss their experience, numbers, causation, research, or anything relating to it.
But his comments are certainly a counterpoint to all of the other comments out there. What I do like about the book is the down to earth, non-technical language that he uses. This is obviously a book for the non-mechanic who is interested in learning everything he/she can about their 996. It's pricey, but seems to me to be a very good resource.
