My wife's 996 C4S caught a bump at low speed and lost the black flimsy plastic center under tray, underneath the front bumper and just behind the lower rubber lip.

Is this an essential piece? Or if it's not a structural piece (pretty flimsy), is there any vital part of the car exposed to the elements without the tray on?

In my 993 I just threw away the big under tray, but with this 996 I'm not sure if that is as good an idea....

You live in a rainy state, I suggest you get a replacement piece and put it back on.
