Default 996 limited slip differential

I track a modified 2004 996 (originally a 40th anniv) and have noted some "wheel spin" and rear end slippage on tight turns. I have been told that the limited slip differential needs to be replaced or rebuilt, and that this problem generally occurs after 3-5,000 track miles on 996s and 997s. I would like to know of any relevant experience or other information before going through a $2200. expense.
