Day ONE of owning a Porsche and frustrated already?
OK, after waiting a week I finally got my car delivered today. Of course the driver ran late but hey I kind of expected that. The good news is the car arrived OK and looks gorgeous. The bad new, the battery is dead, dead, dead. So dead it will not even hold a charge so dead they had to push it out of the covered transport truck. So driver and I look at each other like so now what? We both have NO clue what to do next since we cannot seem to open hood with switches. He and I screw around and just laugh I mean what where they thinking when they built this thing? No battery power equals no electricity and the switches to open hood are 100% electrical with no manual backup therefore here we are its getting late / dark in middle of street with NO access to the cars BATTERY to jump it!!!

So RTFM right? OK so we search for the manual and it's nowhere to be found. Want to guess where that turned up? I run home grab the "Porsche 996 The Essential Companion" (good thing I bought the book before the car) and do a quick forum search as well for the answer. We pop the fuse box plug in the jumper cables and open the hood. Charge it for about 10 - 15 mins while we shoot the **** and bam she starts right up. Sounds sweet. I drive her home park and let her sit running for 15 more minutes and guess what happens? You guessed it as soon as I turn it off? DEAD!

So day one comes to a close and I have a glorified German paper weight occupying one of my parking spaces. Now I would have just bought a battery but by the time all the BS was done it was after 9PM and no one was open and so I guess I will be swapping batteries tomorrow morning. Why make jumping a car so damn complicated? Oh yea, and now the drivers window did not go up fully and I can't close the hood or I have to go through the above BS again tomorrow.

Finally, can you guys give me the short answer what battery I need to pick-up tomorrow? I have a Sears, a Pep-Boys and an AutoZone near me. I just know they are ALL going to be clueless when it comes to this car.

so the good news....
you can pick up a battery at your local autozone a duralast H8-DLG is the one that will fit...

the bad news, it is $134.99..

But once up and running, you will love your new car, so it will be money well spent!

**getting the front hood open is easy once you figured it out! the harder part is if the electronic "popper" goes out! Then you have to dig for the manual pull cable under the left fender... or run it down to the front radiator opening to avod that chore down the road!

Don't let day one spoil your ownership experience.. sounds like you bought it online... it could be worse!

LOL, OK guys I do have to admit that I do keep finding myself looking for any excuse to walk outside and look at her.

Give me some battery part numbers and is there a how to guide on how to remove it? I don't see any clamps holding it down but it is in there solid. It has an Interstate MTP-93 i think. I would go check but the damn hood is locked.
Also, I keep reading about jumper points in the engine bay but I can't seem to find them even after finding a few pictures online just does not look like my engine compartment. It's a 2004 40th AE would the X51 package be the reason my engine bay looks different than some of the ones online showing the jumper cable points?

No, believe me, you are NOT the first one with a dead battery problem.

All this didn't happen without pics!

You might want to post pic of your engine bay.....I'm sure someone here will recommend where to attach the jumpers. I remember on mine (no 40th) that I saw a + sign on a metal tab in there somewhere. The - sign would just go to the body as the ground.

Hope this helps and good luck!

well c70.
A dead battery on a car that had no PM and bought from ebay or other... you are going to get off lucky if thats all she needs. (I assumed all the above from between the lines). Stick with it and you will be fine.. You have to understand you now own a porsche... ummm... Its going to cost you $$ of here let me rephrase "its going to cost you $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$".

welcome abord.. Put your money fears aside and just realize you are going to spend it and you will be a much happier camper.

See you around!

another thing.. You better get it started again and make sure you have 13.6 +/- at the battery. You may have less if the battery is REALLY REALLY bad.. Make sure you do nto have an altinator issue

Walmart, I dislike, but they have the best warranty and price on the P-Car battery. Recently way under a hundred and 4 yr free replacement.

The frustration is just because you haven't been able to really DRIVE it yet! Once you do, all doubts will cease.

The battery is a standard size you can pick up at Wal-Mart, or any auto parts store. I bought mine at Wal-Mart. It's fastened in by a small clamp block at the base- unbolt it (12 or 13mm IIRC) and swap out your old battery with the new one.
